OK… You have my attention on this one. Can someone answer a couple questions; is the Oil Cooler on the maintenance routine for replacement after so many miles? Do the coolers have a high failure rate after X number of miles? Thanks in advance for your reply.

I’m going to replace the oil cooler on my 01 tomorrow. It’s the original cooler, let’s see how it looks after 213,000 miles.

OUCH! WHY are you replacing the oil cooler (heat exchanger in Porsche parlance)???

Just replace the gasket... along with the oil and coolant.

Now you tell me… I replaced the unit today. The oil cooler (heat exchanger) seems to be very well built so I doubt there are many failures with them. On the other hand, the seals were showing some signs of deterioration. The old seals were pliable but while rubbing them between my fingers they were crumbling (see photo). At least I feel better now :dance:

If you have the base model, consider replacing the cooler with the highe capacty S cooler. see http://986forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29627&highlight=oil+cooler
