paint rear bumperettes shop said they desintegrated
 

I had my rear bumper repaired and painted and also asked the shop to paint the bumperettes on my 98. They just called me saying the rubber bumperettes desintegrated due to the paint and they will have to order new ones. Is that possible? or they are bs me? thanks.

Many folks have painted their bumperettes or have had them painted professionally, successfully. I can imagine if they aren't prepped properly the paint will not stick very well.

I would want to see what is left of them if they disintegrated. I guess it is possible they applied something to them that didn't react very well.

I would ask if they try to paint another set how do they plan on preventing the same thing from happening again.

Painted mine 2 years ago for less than $7 .I Washed my bumpers let them dry and painted one coat and they still look perfect.

they didn't keep the desintegrated bumperettes... IDK, I fear everytime I take the car to the shop. Will just buy a pair of used ones and forget about the painting. Does it really look better? never seen a 986 done, I dont like how they look in the newer version, but they are different, they seem larger....

I think they look a lot better painted, especially on lighter colored cars. What color is yours?

bumperplugs.com charges $250 for this. And no they don't melt your bumpers...

Your guys were obviously doing something they didn't know how to.

What did they prep them with, gasoline and a match ? Probably a majority of members on this site have had their bumperettes painted with no problems whatsoever . Some have even been successful painting them as a DIY project . Makes no sense !

Dark colors look great painted, too! Mine were already black, but smooth and shiny black looks way better. I'd always vote for painting them. I had bumperplugs do mine and they did a great job.

I agree with you, MN 986. Your car looks fantastic. The bumperettes look better painted on all colors IMO. They just stand out more unpainted on the lighter colors. I would also rather wax them versus trying to avoid getting wax on them.

BumperPlugs did mine too, a little more than six years ago, and they still look great.

Ed, never heard of anything like this, sounds like fishy to me, had mine done by Eric at Bumperettes.

I always thought rear bumperettes are made tough to absorb/protect straight on impact from the rear. I did DIY mine (black) several months ago about $25 with duplicolor products. Turned out very nice to me. However, my bumperttes are "textured". I tried sanding them down but it was a toughie. Still look ok! It still hard to believe that they will disintegrate, of course if you light them on fire as the previous poster stated.

They're B S 'ing you. I've done 2 sets now, one for me and one for a friends 986, and both turned out great.

I'd find out exactly what they used to make them melt...if they did.

They possibly might have had them too close to a heat source or spilled an acid based product on them.

Either way it's their problem not yours !

I had to sand the texture off of mine (that was real tough). Gave then proper prep and primer and multi coats of paint. They came out great.

The body shop that you used don't know poo about painting if they screwed them up. Get the old ones back for inspection and don't let this shop attempt another set at your expense.
