Likely only the voltage regulator and not the alternator...see my post here...fixed on the cheap.

To determine if it is the bearings, take off the belt. Rotate the shaft by hand, and feel for any catching, bumpiness, dragging or looseness in the shaft. If it does not rotate smooth as silk without any deviation you need to replace the bearings. This goes for any bearings you check. Never spin an unloaded bearing fast by hand, or with an air compressor. You can form micro dents in the balls and races that will grow into a bearing failure over time.
