gear shift problem when putting in reverse

My 986, 1997, when getting out of reverse, the gear shift sometimes fails to put back in first gear. The stick in that case is completely wobbly both in both directions. When reversing a bit more I most of the times manage to get it back in first.

Need to see my mechanic it seems.

Any ideas?

I had a similar problem with my '02 Boxster after reinstalling the transmission, the issue was the shift cables connecting to the transmission had come loose. If you get under the car they are located on the passenger side (American left drive). Make sure they are completely connected to the transmission and firmly into the support brackets, they utilize a squeeze clamp so you may need pliers to reconnect if loose.
