I had a similar problem with my '02 Boxster after reinstalling the transmission, the issue was the shift cables connecting to the transmission had come loose. If you get under the car they are located on the passenger side (American left drive). Make sure they are completely connected to the transmission and firmly into the support brackets, they utilize a squeeze clamp so you may need pliers to reconnect if loose.
