Totaled...looking towards the future

About two months ago, I rear ended a 1980's Dodge Ram and crushed the front of my Boxster. I found out last week that it is in fact going to be considered total. The insurance is paying $9500 for it, which is exactly what I paid for it two years ago.

In the state I was in, I should not have been driving, but I still did. I'm just thankful that nobody was injured, and the truck was completely unharmed. I am thinking about getting a Boxster, this time knowing the things I didn't know last time. My budget has been raised to around 18k. I'm wondering if I should buy a Boxster S in mint condition, or if I should get the 987 base model.

If I end up not buying a Boxster, I'm thinking of getting another sports car, maybe a sports sedan. I've looked at M3's, M5's, and Audi S4's. Do you guys have any other suggestions?

I'd say look for a nice 996 convertible.... I found a perfect, one owner, all service record, service done at the dealer, 5k in wear parts replaced, etc.... fully loaded to the brim from Porsche of Scottsdale in AZ for a price near your budget.

Just keep your eyes open, I loved my boxster, but I fell in love with the 996 after I test drove one.

You can get a very nice '03 or '04 Box-S for that price, but not mint.

987's are not really into that price range yet. Sure, you might be able to find a high mileage one here or there, but for the most part, the early 987's are still in the mid-20's.

18k can pick up a nicely maintained, higher mileage ~2002 M5 - if you want raw power and tons of torque, as well as a classy sedan, you can't go wrong with that car. Be aware that some parts are ridiculously pricey - a pair of front rotors will run you $500.

S4's....well, not my thing personally unless you go back to their twin turbos of 2000-2002...and those are tuning platforms unless you buy one already tweaked out right. However, you can buy a clean one for 10-12k and fix all the weakpoints for another 5k.

M3s are awesome cars - for 18k, you can get a higher mileage one in good shape.

I'd go with a low mileage 03-04 986 S, do the IMSR
and drive it like you stole it.

After 05 the IMS cannot be retrofitted and are still rumored
to have issues.

Corvette is a fanstatic sports car. But it has a lousy image. In France the crwod lines up just to hear the Corvettes take off from start at the 24 Hours of LeMans.
Here it has the gold chain stigma despite the fact that it's the best deal for a high end sports car. I'd take a Corvette over 996 Cabriolet 7 days a week but not a convertible Corvette.

You should consider a CaymanS too. But if you have to have roadster I'd hold out for a 987 S as well. Even if it means waiting a little longer. You'd be surprised how quickly you can save the extra cash when you are not driving a sports car every day.

As I need a car right now, it would mean I would have to buy something very cheap right now to save up money for a Cayman or a 987S. I'd be very happy with a 986S, just as long as it was nicely maintained.

I'm looking at a Boxster S currently, I'd like opinions on it. I realize, knowing as much as I do on Boxsters, that it's hard to tell anything just from an ad, but the price is a bit low and I'm wondering if that's just due to the high mileage:
