It is so much easier with the wheel off that I would not do it any other way.
You have much better visibility and you can make sure that you treads on the spark plug are going in correctly.
A easy job can turn into a disaster by skipping a step IMO.

I jacked up one side with the wheel removed and put a jack stand under there as well.
Lot more room to work and see!
