Opinions on Sunoco Gas

Anybody have an opinion on using this gas in our cars. It has about 10% ethanol in it?

The Ultra 94 is the highest octane gas I can get here, with the next highest being 91 octane which is non-ethanol.

Which should I be using?

Porsche recammends 93 oct for optimum performance and gas mileage...but you can get away with 91 oct of course.

Here in CA all we can get is 91 octane. I don't know why, I never looked for 93 until I got the Boxster a few months ago! I recall someone said on this board that CA has only 91.

Does anyone know 1)why? and 2)What is the safest method for upping the octane? I have read about adding "xylene" but I am sure there are many products out there.

I have never used 93 in any of my Porsches and am wondering how the car could run any better. However, I have noticed that Chevron with Techron is absolutely the best gas in CA. Some of you may know that our gas is totally crappy but for some reason, my cars run, start and idle better with Chevron.

I have to sound like an ad but it is actually true.

What about the issue of ethanol in the gas?

We have to run on a Winter blend here which is 10% ethanol. Most if not all vehicles are engineered to handle it. If I remember correctly, I believe I read that it actually helps raise the octane rating. When it first came out years ago, we had problems with older engines (including bikes, outboards, etc.) having plastic and neoprene parts soften and "melt". But those parts have been redesigned to cope with an alcohol mix. One plus - you don't need to add HEET.

BTW - my '05 manual recommends 98 RON!
