How to tell if car has a 2.7 or 3.2 engine?

A friend of mine got a 2000 Boxster base as a part of real estate deal.
He got the house on auction and the car was included.

It's a 2000 Boxster base 5 sp manual (just like mine.. only yellow), however he's been told that the engine was replaced with a 3.2 from S version. There are no receipts or any other proof of that.

I helped him change belt and clean the MAF on weekend and we didn't see anything that would say 3.2 when looking at the engine (there was alot of oil.. so AOS might be going bad).

He has a newer MAf though it's ending in 125.01 and considering his car was manufactored in 99 I expected him to have 124.00 MAF

Is there a way to tell what engine is in his car short of going to a mechanic?
We did a series of short drag races over the weekend and he didn't do that good
and by short drag races I mean a couple hunded yards we both drive like pansies

Thanks
Sasha

A quick way, though not 100% accurate, would be to have a look at the oil cooler on the driver's side of the engine. If it's the larger cooler, it is likely a 3.2 (though some have updated 2.7s with the larger cooler).

You can also look for the engine type code near the crank...I believe the 3.2 is type M96.21.

2.7L (M96/22, M96/23), and the 3.2L (M96/21, M96/24)

Jack the car up and crawl under it...on the bottom of the engine is a ID number. Write it down and use Porsche's ID number checker and that should tell you what engine it is.
