No AC at high RPM

This is the first summer I have owned my 2004 986 and in Houston traffic, driving fast is not an usually an option. However, yesterday I was passing a line of traffic and had a chance to rev the engine to the 6K range and noticed that the AC quit cooling temporarily. When I went back to normal driving all was well. To test my theory, I ran the RPM up near maximum a few more time and each time, it seemed like the AC quit cooling. The fan and everything worked as normal, just the cold air stopped flowing for a short while. Is this normal? Does the system shut the compressor off to protect it from high RPMs or should I be looking at something else.

Thanks for any advice.

Normal. This happens in both my 01 Boxster and 08 Audi.

In my experience, it happens in almost all vehicles, perhaps the AC clutch disengages at a given RPM to protect the system, that's the story I'm sticking with..

My Ford did it at WOT regardless of RPM to protect the compressor and increase power to the wheels.
