You are correct that the 18 wheel on a 97 Box is a no go. Porsche specifically states that this wheel will bend components of the suspension for that model year. So, wise choice to lay off the 18s.

Since the 17s were an option on the Box, I am not sure that you need spacers if you stick with one of the wheels that was available from Porsche for that car.

I have a set of 18" Turbo 1 wheels off of a 996. I can check for if these would fit on your car if you would like. They are listed for sale in the classified section here.
