Non-Functioning Volume Knob 2000 Boxster S

My volume button does nothing when turned up or down. I do have sound from my system and with the GAL turned on the volume does increase with road speed. The volume knob does function when pushed (mutes) the radio. Any ideas? Thanks for any help in advance!

I also have a '00 S

Was just in Ireland last Sept./Oct. - I didn't see single Boxster there. Lots of 911s though... Anyway, My uncle has a '00 base that's doing the same thing. At first I told him it may be the ignition switch going out. His mechanic replaced that and it's still doing it. Now the Porsche mech. says it's a bad head unit for the stereo, and that he's seen quite a few of them. The ignit. switch is very cheap to replace and the head units can be bought on ebay or other classifieds for under $200. I'd try the switch first though... Any other strange stuff happening? Like lights staying on etc.

A simple suggestion I've read on the forum here somewhere when the head-unit is not functioning properly, is flip down the faceplate and clean the contacts with some alcohol

Just suggested that to my uncle... He tried it this a.m. and it worked!

thanks!
