An 'S' for the weekend!
Well I spoke with a friend who owns an '03 Boxster S. He and his wife just purchased a brand new S with PDK and put his for sale. After driving around in our '98 base today we thought we'd give our friend a call and see if he would like to sell us his car. He told me he'd leave the car with us for the weekend and we could decide then.
(Anyone interested in a '98 base? )

Sounds like someone is trying to tell you something...
As long as the S has been taken care of and didn't have crazy high mileage, I'd go for it and ditch the 98 base.

If you don't like it...
Have your friend post it here, others may be interested.
I for one would take a look.

Since I know the seller I know how he has taken care of the car. FWIW, he takes it to the Porsche dealer he bought it from for everything. I prefer to do my own maintenance, chose my own oils, and OCI, but at least I know this car hasn't been neglected. BTW it has 60k miles while my base has 48k.
Urban Legend, I will if I'm not interested.
And I like our '98 base as well, no complaints at all, but why not upgrade to an S if possible?
I'm probably going to buy it this weekend...
Just wish it was Artic Silver.

Be sure....
as some like the 5 speed gear ratios better than the 6 speeds. And on the 201HP you can keep your foot down longer and stronger than in the S.
Inspect the CV joint boots as they are a weak link on the S models due to more stress from the angle of the half shafts.
Had a '99 (totaled) and now have a '01S. I think the fun factor was the same.

Thanks Mike,
He had the boots replaced last fall, but I'll be sure to take a look. It's interesting that you put the fun factor as the same. I'll be sure to take this into account this weekend. Thanks.

I think you'll find a nice noticeable difference in power between your 201hp 98 and the 258hp in the 03 S. Plus, the 03 has the glass window soft top....a real nice update!

We spent the day yesterday driving the '03 S, so I thought I'd share some thoughts.
First the positives:
POWER, and TORQUE
The acceleration of the S is very impressive, and quite fun!
The condition of the car is very good, it has 61k miles, but feels very tight.
Lots of new stuff, tires, CV boots, and a complete service history.
It has some aftermarket stereo equipment, which has been professionally installed.
It comes with a very impressive list of options such as clear bra, litronics, clear headlights heated seats, as well as others.
I think I can get into this car, and make it my own. With the '98 tip, I kind of felt that I'd eventually replace it with something faster, (we do attend PDX's, AX's and track day's)
The negatives:
Headliner, I miss seeing the structure for the top, and don't necessarily like being insulated from the car.
The trunk switches, I kind of like the big release levers, as opposed to the electronic switches.
We will need to replace the IMS ASAP with the LN, Raby retrofit bearing, as I'm a bit more concerned with the single row unit as opposed to our current two row bearing.
The conclusions:
I think we will be talking to the current owner on Monday to see if we can come to terms, which shouldn't be a problem.
Next weekend we may very well be into an '03 Boxster S
Anyone interested in a '98 base tip with 48k miles? Very well cared for!

good idea on the IMS upgrade. Had mine done by a small shop nearby. Piece of cake they told me, they did the clutch and LNE unit for just under $2K (labor is a little pricier in these parts).

Sorry guys for not getting back to this thread sooner, but we backed out of the deal due to a developing situation.
After test driving the '03 S, we decided to make the purchase, we looked at a few options, and how to sell our current '98. In that time frame we found out that my wife is pregant!
We though we might not need a second two seater with our developing situation!!
Anyhoo, I'll speak with the current owner and see if he'd like to offer the car for sale via the internet, and with his O.K. I'll post it up hear.

I'd say that's probably the single most understandable and awesome reason to back out of a deal like that. Congratulations to you and your wife. In the end, I'd say you're getting a much better addition to the family, and you've still got a '98 that you're happy with.

Thank you guys.
I did really like the '03 S, but this weekend, I was able to get the oppertunity to drive an '09 S with PDK. WOW FRICKEN WOW what a car!! I never thought a Boxster would be all that. Heck, with the little one on the way, maybe we'll hold out for a couple years, and pick up on of these cars on the second hand market...

That doesn't sound like a bad idea...maybe the '98 will be up for sale, after all, some day.
