How do I launch my boxster s?
What rpm range is a good for launching the boxster s 3.2 manual tranny? I am trying to find the sweet spot. but I am afraid of launching it from anything higher than 3,000 rpms lol. Let me know what you guys have found to be a good balance so it doesnt just spin the wheels but hooks up pretty well. I have 265 size tires on back. It doesnt have launch control or the active suspension, its a 2001 boxster s with the 3.2L. 6spd. thanks again.

Here's a link to a 911 with PDK and manual. I use the same technique but limit my RPM to around 3K. Too low and you'll have to take it easy on the clutch. 3.5K will be more forgiving if don't let off your clutch easy. Do this right and both you and your car will smile :D

Thanks for the link, I don't see me dumping the clutch at 5500 rpms happening too often. I have too much mechanical sympathy for that. Hell I think that first is too short for meaningful accelleration, do they have a 30-90mph time comparison?

It's like trying to get a Bull to give milk... they're just not made to do it.
Buy a 'Stang and you'll be much happier! Cheers! |
Here you might want to contact these guys sooner or later for a new tranny.

Have to agree with the other posts, if you want a stoplight rocket to rag on get one cheaper to repair.

i'd rather jump on the gas in 2nd 3rd and 4th.

This is what you need....

Could always drive over the edge, I'm sure the acceleration after that is epic.

serious answer
Yes, OK, the 986 is definitely not a drag car or a burnout machine. However, there are certainly occasions when you need to get it going quick. Anyone autocrossing knows this- winning can often be measured in tenths or even hundredths.
Soooo- getting the engine 2500-300 then letting out the clutch seems to work for me. It takes some practice (I recommend AXing or AX "school" to learn the technique). Temperature, road surface, and tire pressures make a difference. To get the quickest time off the line, you want almost no spin and lots of hook, but you don't want the engine to bog down. It takes some real practice. Also, remember that the box doesn't have a limited slip, so when you're spinning, it's just one wheel. |
I have to agree, although lauching takes your car to its limits and it feels good to know that she still has power. A new tranny and clutch won't be that much fun once you have to replace it. Dumping gas between 1st and 2nd gear and cornering will give you just as much thrill and it last longer! Not to mention breaking... I love to slow down and then lock the break to a complete stop.

Launching
I have a 2003 S, I have had it a year, at first I was driving like a mad man, reving the thing up all the time. Than I found out how much a re-built engine is, wooo nelly! What I love is driving on 280 between SF and San Jose, around 3K in 6th gear, when when a Lexus or Audi want to race I drop to 5th and progressively, quickly floor the gas, what a sweet sound and feeling!
