Out of storage yet guys and gals????
So, my baby has been sitting with a battery maintainer and a cover on her for over three months in the garage... it's going to be close to 50 tomorrow here in Northern Illinois... what do you think? Every year I go through the same thing... I always say I'm going to wait until its 60, but man... I want to drive it! I think I'm going to go for it!
|
Heh... Another Northern IL resident here; mine just came out this morning!
|
I'll have the Boxster out in about 2 weeks.
Today, and this weekend, I'll do about 300-400 miles in the 993 Turbo. She got washed & waxed yesterday. Already signed-up and paid for a DE at Gingerman (April) and Blackhawk (May) for the Turbo. I need to learn to tame +408 HP! |
I was going to this morning... but I had to take my cousin to the airport and with three suitcases I didn't want to puch it:)
BEAUTIFUL Turbo Flavor! |
I meant "Push" not "Puch" :)
|
OK, it is gonna be 50 out by the end of the day
but what was the temp overnight and what is the temp of the pavement? And what kind of tires do you have? Cold pavement means cold tire compound which means not as effective in gripping the microscopic imperfections in the road surface and that translates into lots less traction.
Drive carefully. |
Hey I'm from Northern Illinois originally too - Rockford, but live in the montains of Colorado now. I'm jones-ing for my Boxster, but the road I live on is still covered in snow and ice and I wouldn't be able to climb the hill to get back to my house if I took it out. It will be at least another month for me . :(
|
It hit 50 for the first time in northern Colorado on Tuesday. I brought the Boxster out as fast as I could get the tires deflated and the battery re-attached!
I like to wait until it rains so that the roads get cleaned off a little, but I usually can't hold off if the weather's warm. |
it will be a few more weeks here. It will be close to 50 also, but i only have 2 wheels on the car. The other two are getting repaired, so even if i get the itch, i can't take it.
I still have to replace the aos and flush the coolant. |
ALMOST!! I went battery shopping and will pick up a napa gold filter, some Castro syntec tomorrow!!
Things to do first: 1.) Battery 2.) oil and filter 3.) fule filter 4.) replace top or rear window 5.) Update my usb tunes!! 6.) wash the cat prints off And I am good to go!! |

Cat prints? Awe man... that just doesn't sound good... You should ask the Easter Bunny for a cover for next year:) |
I'm originally from De Kalb but moved to Colorado in '87. I drive my Boxster all Winter unless the snow gets too deep! This car does amazingly well in the white stuff.
|
I'm sitting in an airport terminal on my way home from a 2-week trip. For 3 weeks prior to my departure I was unable to drive my Boxster due to ice and snow. I have summer tires and I just didn't feel like taking a risk. So, the car has been sitting for 5 weeks.
This is probably the longest period that it has gone un-driven. I have it on a battery maintainer, so I expect it to start. Since I normally don't let the car hibernate, do you northern owners have any tips for the first drive tomorrow? |
I'm about 2 weeks away from pulling Nicole out of the garage. I hope we get some rain first to wash away the salt.
 |

That is one GORGEOUS car!!! Can I get a ride in it? :D  |

Let's go to the TOD and Twisted Pickle. |
Driven daily, rain or shine.
|
I'm in Valpo, over in NW Indiana. Drove mine to the office today. I've actually had mine out few times over the winter. If it's nice, no salt on the road and decent temps, I'll get mine out.

Opening Day of baseball season is also my traditional opening day for the Porsche Season. Just a little too unpredictable here in Michigan for a March opener. Mine is a summer car with no winter tires which I store in a heated garage 20 miles from here. Taking it out any earlier than April is just a cruel tease. We'll be into the 20s-30s at night for at least 3 more v e r y s l o w weeks!

I took my Boxster out for a long drive yesterday and it was great; I'll keep the winter tires on for at least a few more weeks.

the plan for this year was sept. 17-19. i'll be at a wedding ( can't believe people are so inconsiderate ) so a spring drive would be nice. |
I've been driving mine all winter too. A hardtop and a set of winter tires, and this car is great in the snow.
This is not spring. Don't be fooled. My other car won't come out until April, and after the roads are completely cleaned of salt. The Boxster will also get a top/bottom/nooks and crannies wash too. |
My 01 has been in an offsite garage, took it for a 25 mile ride today, put it back. All I ever do is fill up the gas tank and unhook the negative battery clamp.
My other 2 Porsches have snow tires and have been daily drivers all winter. |
I feel so sorry for all you "non southern" boys!!
We might be Florida rednecks, but we can drive our sports cars ALL YEAR LONG!!! I had the top down last weekend!! Yeeeeee Ha!! |

Checking in at over 440 miles this weekend.

I'll wager that most of us up here have our tops down more miles per year than you good ole boys.... BTW how's the weather been lately? |
Box won't come out until late April...too much salt on the roads and still a lot of snow to melt. The posters from northern Chicago 'burbs, don't forget the PCA Tech session at Northstar in Barrington March 21...great way to "start" the driving season; especially those new to track and autocross events. There are always some brave souls who bring their P-cars out for the day!
|
Mind if Milwaukee region members show up for the free beer and pizza?
|
Well, I wound up getting my Box out! She started right up and drove great! I had a perma-smile the whole afternoon Saturday! Maybe after the fog clears out today I'll take her out again after work!
Did any other midwesterners notice a lot of nice cars on the road Saturday? |
Although it was about to rain last night, I got my car out for fifteen minutes. Ran to the office to pick up something and shot right back home to the dry garage. My rear tires are worn just enough to turn them into ice skates when the roads are wet.
I haven't had my car out for a decent drive in well over a month. My free time and good weather have not collided in a way that produces drive time. Odd for Houston winters, really... this is actually the fun time of year to drive a boxster with the top down, or the top up due to the lack of blistering heat and humidity in the 90% range. For just a few moments, I considered selling my car. But this drive reaffirmed my love for my Boxster in particular. I think I'll keep this car until someone takes away my driver's license due to old age. |

We're used to the Florida heat and I seldom drive it in the city and traffic, anyway. That does get brutal in July!! Besides, I'm from central Ohio, originally, and those summers are far more brutal than north Florida. Weather in Jax has been great, several weekends in a row. Been colder than usual, but that means it's in the 60's most days!! :D We've had a remarkable string of our usual three days per week of rain running during the week with nice, clear weekends. I've put 2k on the Box since December and just on weekends. I have several light colored, I guess originally, hunting shirts that have the big flap on the back with netting underneath. They are long sleeve, and along with a great synthetic fiber woven sports cap from Australia, summer top down driving is quite pleasurable. I don't like baseball style caps, as the brims are so big, it's almost like having the top back up. I also like to flip the visors all the way down and forward to "open up" the overhead view as much as possible. |
Up here we are about 3-4 weeks away. Some guys were out over the weekend but I tend to wait until we get a few solid days of rain and the street sweepers have had a chance to get one round in.
Here we use a combination of sand and salt, so it can be quite treacherous on the body work if you get out too early. |
March 20th the Beepster is Sprung from it's secure heated storage ....
Check the tire pressure, reconnect the battery, start her up and a short drive to fill up with Shell 91 (no ethanol!) and a nice long cruise back home ... |
tomorrow's the day blondie gets to go anywhere.
|
April 1st boooooo! I too wait for the rain to wash away all the salt. It rained
all weekend here in Toronto, which was great! 2 more weeks.. can't wait! |
