iPhone 3G/iPod hookup

I want to hook up my iPhone 3G to my car. I have the standard becker cdr-220 cd player and the standard cd changer. I was reading a website of a guy who does various hacks and this was one of them, but I'm slightly confused. He says he ordered something from becker but was unable to use it for some reason and thats the part I'm confused about. He ended up doing some alternative method. Can someone explain a little better why he wasn't able to do what he had originally intended. I'm not an audio expert or anything. His hack can be found here:

I also wanted to know if it would be possible to hook up the iPhone 3G with the same setup since I know that some of my friends can do their iPods with some accessories but not the iPhone for some reason (even on airplane mode). Thanks.

It's a lot more complicated, but aftermarket replacements are much better. I stream calls and music through my iPhone and Nexus through bluetooth & ran a standard usb plug into the center console to charge when necessary.

he wasn't able to use the Becker kit as is b/c the OEM h/u allows only for an either or choice: cd changer or aux in. Like you, he had both cd changer and wanted ipod hook up but he wanted to be able to choose between them at any time. Thus he added a switch to choose and just hooked them up thru the same input on the h/u.

Now, if you want to forgo the CDX and just run w/ ipod, you can use the Becker piece - you'll just have to (thru the h/u) turn on the Aux-in and turn off the CDX. Know that the Becker piece, unless they've changed it recently, doesn't have any charging capabilities for ipod/iphone and typically just uses the headphone jack for sound source (unless you get an ipod bottom connector that converts to 2 RCAs).

There are some aftermkt suppliers that do make all-in-one type things you are looking for. Can't recall specifically but one might be PIE. Try a search on various terms here and you should find.

Thanks for the help. I may just do what this guy did since it seems relatively simple.
