Key Replacement

I bought a 2003 986 in October. The seller only gave me 1 main key that has the 3 buttons on it. He said he lost the other one. What options do I have. I am scared I will lose this key and be really screwed.
Thanks

Just in reading other posts, the key is about $250 from the dealership, and I don't think there are many options, as it must be programmed.
Don't feel too bad, I lost one of the keys to my CX7 Mazda and it was over $400 to replace!

Try Suncoast for the parts - http://www.****************************************************.com/category/986Keys.html

It looks like 115.49 for the head and 22.95 for the key blank. Call them about maybe sending a vin number for cutting the key blank. I believe you have to get your dealer to do the programming.

You can also order just a Valet key. This is just a key w/ no transmitter. It's purpose is to leave it with a parking attendant who cannot access the trunk/frunk. It's much less expensive and makes a perfect emergency key.

Cheers!

Spare key

the cost for my non remote spare was as follows
blade(suncoast) $22.95 + $7.95frt
locksmith to cut blade $35.00 + $2.10tx
key cap Porsche #996-538-423-01 $43.14 + $3.01tx
dealer programing $120.00 + $8.40tx
total $242.55
I did not need another remote head key but if I had that head would have been around $115.00. There just is not an inexpensive way to have an operational key made.

There is a cheap solution: Take the transponder pill out of the key, and tape it to the inside of the ignition trim piece with electrical tape, and just make a copies of the key blade for $30 bucks via keysinthepost.com or a competitor (it's simple: you just upload them a pic of your current key blade and they mail you a new blade). That's all!

Garage
https://keysinthepost.com/ I have used this company before. You still need to get the car programmed to accept it.
