Console Delete

Thanks to input from several of you I deleted the console much to the happiness of my right leg.
I bought the carpeted trim piece but when I go to fit it, it seems like the aft portion of it is too narrow and will break if I force it down. Any tips.

I'm tilting the forward portion of it under the dash and it seems to fit well but I can't tilt the whole thing (mainly the back portion) of it down to snap into place. 2003 S.

What am I doing wrong?
Thanks
