... and back to the original question:

I had the chance to look at MANY 2002+ 996 headlights while being at Thunderhill with PCA this weekend.
The 2002+ 996 headlights have chrome where the 986 lights have either painted plastic or mildly reflecting material.
So he just used the standard 996 headlights for his conversion

Ok, aside from the '02+ 996 conversion, there could be a couple of other factors.

The quality of that picture is hard to deduct from, but it doesn't look like the turn signal is amber -possibly a clear bulb is being used.

ALSO...
Even in that style of light (that we are generically calling '02+ 996) there are 2 versions available:
  1. '01+ 996 TURBO lights
  2. '02+ 996 CARRERA lights

The Turbo lights are smooth inside and surrounding areas of the lights.
The Carrera lights have these ridges -quite like Ruffles Potato Chips that run vertically through them.

Turbo (Clean and smooth)

Carrera (Notice the ridges)

Furthermore, halogen versions do not have the oval chrome washer/sprayer cap while the Litronics (xenons) do.
