Secondary Air Injection Malfunction

My CEL is on for a Secondary Air Injection Malfunction. Does anyone know the easiest way (other than taking to a mechanic) to diagnose the problem? Is there a way to trigger the secondary air pump other than waiting for the engine to be cold? I also know most of the components are way up front on the motor and hard to reach. I read the only way to get to them is to remove the alternator. If anyone had the same problem and found a simple way to deal with it, I would appreciate the feedback.
