1999 Boxster (2.5L) 62,000 miles..just changed plugs and cleaned out the radiators. In the process of doing the 60k maintainance.

Purchased 1 month ago......nice car...no issues.

heliguy 11-11-2011 06:58 AM

'03 S, 85,000 trouble free miles. Two water pump replacements, that's it.

fdunphy 11-18-2011 11:56 AM

1997 2.5

1997 Boxster 2.5L 126,000 kms and no troubles. Had it up on the rack and the engine is bone dry. no leaks whatsoever. just did the waterpump et al. I should add that I purchased the car last April 2011 and have put on 12km since. I can't stop driving it. It is my daily driver. I've heard from Porsche mechanics that driving these things everyday and maintaining them is better than letting them sit for months in a garage. Low miles on a boxster is not always a good thing. My goal is to get it perfectly maintained and when I can afford an '09 pull the trigger.

Need help

I just bought a '97 Boxster with 31K on it. It has a TPC supercharger and I need to find a rebuild kit for the super charger. Any ideas on this or what kind of supercharger it is? Looks like and eaton but not sure what model.

Thanks..

Brockmeister 11-19-2011 05:44 PM

bought a '99 base in July w/ 66,000 mi. Put 5,000 on so far and the engine is running great. Had to put a new top on it besause of the plastic cracking. Yes, I'm knocking on wood.

alvinlee 11-19-2011 09:01 PM

2000 S - Third owner - I bought it in Dec 2008 with 16k miles. Have 40k on it now. Replaced air flow meter $400. Did 30k service, oil changes etc. - That's it.
What an awesome car. Everytime I take it in to a mechanic I get comments on the great shape it's in.

recycledsixtie 11-20-2011 05:59 AM

True I have only..

had my 2001 Boxster base for six months and it has only 37k miles on it, it has been a great car so far. Installed IMS guardian on it last week. No breakdowns but have done cv boots, bought 2nd hand winter tires/rims. It is better on snow covered roads than my 99 MX5 Miata. Miss the MX5 but overall the Boxster is more fun and more car. Now if only I could find a way to stop my wife complaining about the Porsche $ outlay(so far $2000 since I got it).....:ah:

ProjectM96 11-24-2011 06:39 PM

Bought my 00 986 2.7L last year with 76,900 miles. Now has 85,000 miles. I am the 4th owner.

Mechanic advised me to replace water pump since he can tell it was going bad. Also replaced driver side inner tie rod, rear plastic window, and cleaned the throttle body. And replaced about 6 different light bulbs that all seemed to go bad within the 1 year I owned it. Remote battery was replaced and needs to be re-programmed to car but I refuse to pay the quoted $350 from Porsche. No signs of bad IMS or RMS when I checked the oil filter during an oil change 2000 miles ago. Interior door handle is broken-Will not retract leaving driver window 1/4 inch open. I use tape to hold the handle closed. Porsche wants $400 to fix-I refuse.

So the only mechanical fixes were inner tie rod and water pump.
$750 total parts and labor done at a normal cheap mechanic shop in Philly.

But now I can hear my starter going bad at start ups in cold weather. Also my ignition switch is getting harder to turn. That is going to need to be replaced soon.

Pilot2519j 11-24-2011 07:54 PM

I have a 2003S with 71,200 miles the only item that gives me a headache is the notchy second gear shift. Sometimes it doesn't want to go in. I been warming up the engine for 5 minutes before leaving and it has improved somewhat but every once in a while it does it again.

986_c6 11-26-2011 12:27 AM

02 base, orig owner with 75k miles, tracked ~35 track days, light mods of b & b exhaust, afe intake, h & r springs. Had rms seals replaced under warranty years ago, otherwise no major problem.

Minor problem was just the ignition switch and just recently either the power steering pump or lines (leaking causing smoke out of the side vents at the Infineon track).

thstone 11-26-2011 08:17 AM

I just passed 100,000 miles this week! Engine runs like it was brand new (with 22 track days this year).

lahalte 11-26-2011 08:58 AM

I just passed 60000 on a base 2000.No major problem.Changed water pump.That's it

Saw76 11-26-2011 09:16 PM

I have a 2000 Boxster 74,000 miles I'm the second owner It runs great and we have not had any problems with it. We just put new Potenza tires on it and Had a local Porsche shop do a brake upgrade with new Pads and drilled rotors. Stainless braided lines. etc. I'm new to these cars and worry about this IMS fail people are talking about.

You know, I have been a Porsche fan since day 1 when I began spannering changing engines & gearboxes in VW type 1 Beetles. Buying 2 crap cars to make 1 good one.During that time we (dad & I)always dreamt of Porsches. Fast forward 30Yrs and I have a 2001 BOX 3.2. The look on his face, when the garage opened, I will never forget. He is 78 now and loves the car.
I have replaced the IMS bearing for peace of mind & recently did the water pump & low temp thermostat & engine mount.
Overall the vehicle is reliable & well cared for.
Definitely recommend a PPI by a qualified P car mechanic.
Be careful what you buy and it will serve you well. Buy bad & you will pay$$$$

Sitting here in my 95k 2.5 with track day plans ahead of me, I like the sound of that.

Nice Story Dave. Like hearing stuff like that. Similar story except with my 18 year
old son.

mdex 11-28-2011 01:16 PM

I hate to jinx myself..... but...

2001 S
Just turned 200,000kms... with tons of track time.
I had a few rms seals replaced when it was new
Had to do a clutch when the pressure plate failed around 160,000km
Replaced the coolant bottle
On my 2nd go around on shocks / springs / bushings etc
Have done rear bearings 2 times

But considering how many hard track miles this car has its amazing. When it finally needs it I am debating a factory 3.6 or one of Jakes but I don't think this car owes me anything!

milliemax 11-28-2011 01:53 PM

Fingers crossed 99 91K 3rd owner all records love this car no real problems RMS replaced when new Driven 3 times a week for fun Did I say fingers crossed ?

fourniem 11-28-2011 05:16 PM

I am on 227,000 kms on my 2000 2.7. appart from changing the oil every 5000-8000 Kms max and other normal maintenance, it cost me an alternator, a water pump and a coolant bottle...I track the car a few times every year and I run it 12 months/year in Montreal... lots of snow...

Best car i ever had !!

Pat 11-28-2011 06:29 PM

My 2001 S just crossed 105K miles. Typical maintenance for a 986:
Water pump
RMS (previous owner)
Clutch (previous owner)
Front engine mount
General consumables

I bought it about 19 months ago and have put 33K miles on it in that time, including about ten track days. I don't baby it.

Paul_B 11-29-2011 02:55 PM

I'll post again as I'm approaching 105k miles now.
2.5l 1999 boxster, daily driver bought 5 yrs ago with about 60k on the clock.

Recent(ish) required work includes
- new ignition switch
- new MAF (due to Check Engine Light coming back on, though I got about 30k additional miles out of the old MAF by cleaning it)
- new coolant tank
- new starter motor assembly (starter woudn't disengage cleanly and made nasty noise after starting)
- new clutch + flywheel

Never touched or looked at the RMS, but I don't know about the previous owners.

Proud to make it past 100k :)

stelan 11-15-2015 07:02 PM

high mileage runnning great

believe it or not, 99 Boxster 2.5 185k miles running great

thstone 11-15-2015 07:21 PM

Update for Post #93 from 11/26/2011:

The engine lasted until 146,000 miles and 85 track days with over 20,000 shifts at redline (and a couple of downshifts that were slightly above redline!!). Original IMS. Final failure was a broken valve lifter.

Do you worry about taking your engine to redline once a week? I did it 5 times per lap x 12 laps per session x 4 sessions per track day x 85 track days. And then, it finally broke.

jb92563 11-16-2015 11:53 AM

Tom, what did you do for a new engine when it finally died?

A salvage engine or a custom rebuilt.

I'm guessing since you are running stock class, it was a salvage engine?

I'm still only at ~75k miles so still a young engine.

Duezzer 11-16-2015 06:14 PM

At 125,000km - did a preemptive set of work
AOS, IMS, RMS,Plugs, Boots and Coils.
Only AOS and plugs needed to be changed in all actuality
99 2.5

I has a custom rebuilt engine put together for over $15K and it failed on the first lap. The shop rebuilt it at no cost and it failed again during the first track session. Then the shop refused to rebuild it again at no cost so I was out $15K (no warranties on track engines and they didn't care about me as a customer).

Then I bought a salvage engine from a Tip Boxster with 92K miles for $1800 and had it installed for $2200. Its been running great all year without any problems. It was recently dyno'd at 196rwhp which is pretty strong. I wanted a Tip because I felt that an engine from a car with an auto trans was probably never revved very hard.

cesarpeji 11-17-2015 04:47 AM

2006 Boxster S

I had 98k miles and still running strong! not raced but daily driver.

Retroman1969 11-17-2015 09:23 AM

'99 Base, daily driver, 156,000 miles and counting. ;)
Still drives like new. Only typical maintenance and replacing worn out parts (alternator, control arms, wheel bearings, etc.)
Engine has been great.

kk2002s 11-17-2015 09:38 AM

Still a youngster at 87,000 miles. No engine related parts replaced, everything still original including clutch. Don't track yet but I have done some long drives with it, 10-15 hours at a time
I have noticed in the last couple months a few drips of something(Thinking coolant) so I have to track that down
No oil leaks
1 sort of break down (I was able to limp home) Fuel pump relay

I plan on doing AOS, WP. Low temp thermo this winter/spring just because

steved0x 11-17-2015 10:06 AM

I just hit 120,000 miles on my 2000 S, the last 2 years it has been mostly track (HPDE starting in the beginner group and easing my way along the progression of run groups) and autocross.

I kind of baby it, I don't like to go above 6,500 and on track I usually shift between 6,100-6,250.

New clutch, dual row IMS bearing at 103,000, coolant bottle, AOS, various things replaced by previous owner (I bought it at 103,000). Since I have had it I had one breakdown, failed crank position sensor.

Mods:
Oil pressure & temp gauges
UD Pulley
160 Low temp thermostat and new WP
2nd cat delete pipes
Just got GT3 LCA installed up front (-2.2 camber, zero toe) and rennline tow links in back (-1.6 camber, smidgen of toe in)
Just this morning finished installation of LN 2 QT deep sump kit. Oil pan was clean with a *very* few small plastic bits.

Has been reliable so far. The only "worry" point is the cam deviations, they are both right at -6. They are steady and are not increasing at an appreciable rate (I had a scare one time when I checked them without the car being warmed up and thought they were getting worse at a rapid rate). I talked with a respected mechanic that has been through training with Jake Raby and Tony Callas and he said when they get to -9 and the CEL comes on then call him. So that was good enough for me.

Meir 11-17-2015 10:28 AM

just sold my 99 with 165K.
new owner drove the car from south Florida to North Carolina, no issue.

Gelbster 11-17-2015 06:10 PM

Dodged a bullet Adam? Good for you !
The Dealer did not drop the pan and dissect the filter?
How do you explain the wonderful effect of Techron ?
"03 S with 28k miles. Mostly street use with occasional autocross. No issues besides a pretty loud knock and slight RMS seep that went away. Had it flatbedded to dealer for the knock. They couldn't find the cause. I believe the scan tool said it was a cylinder misfire. They drove it around and it actually fixed itself. I put a bottle of techron in the tank the week before it happened and that was the only variable. Never used it before then and have never since and the engine seems to run well."

thejack 12-01-2015 01:06 AM

1997, 2.5L boxster, 250k km, no mechanical issues apart from clutch replacement at 160k. I use it everyday...

cribfiller 12-01-2015 03:49 AM

2002, 2.7L 85,000 mi. Purchased 7.5 years ago with 38,000 mi. Oil changes at 5,000 mi intervals.

Dam - I spoke to soon, sort of.
I'm finishing up replacing my Coolant tank. The carpet wasn't damp. When I took the carpet out and the foam/Plastic insulator floor out, there it was, a puddle of coolant under the tank. It was finding it's way to various place it could drip out

Wret 12-01-2015 04:28 AM

2001, 3.2L. Purchased 7 years ago with 40,000 miles. Curently at 187,000. Oil changed at 15k-ish intervals. Still has original clutch as far as I know.

Trinamo 12-02-2015 07:45 AM

2001 S, daily driver and it is DRIVEN. 89,500 miles

dghii 12-02-2015 03:39 PM
