Thought I would add to this post. Just picked up a 2001 S with 40.8k miles. I put 800 miles on it in two days driving back from California to Washington. I bought it from the original owner and this is the unscheduled work he has had done.

Manifold and cat
Cracked overflow tank

That's it!

The mechanic at Stead Porsche said the RMS had some very minor seepage and should be replaced when the clutch is replaced in another 10k or so. He quoted me $2800 for a new clutch, RMS, and the new LN IMS Ceramic Bearing.

Cloudsurfer 09-06-2009 08:08 PM

I certainly wouldn't lose sleep over cylinder sleeve worries. Short of tearing the motor down and re-sleeving it, there's nothing you can do to prevent that, so drive the car and enjoy it, and if you happen to be one of the unlucky few, well, pay up. If you can't accept that slim possibility for catastrophe, sell the car.

As to the IMS issues, this does concern me, and unless you have the latest IMS from Porsche, I would swap that bearing out whenever you've got the gearbox off, likely for a clutch or RMS leak. I have the updated LN IMS shaft in the 3.6 that I'm building.

The RMS is just an oil seal. It may never leak, or it may leak within a relatively short time. Either way, while expensive, it's just an oil leak.

ehanauer 09-07-2009 07:40 AM

My 99 Boxster

had 58000 trouble free miles when I traded it in.

My 06 which I bought with 12k (now 14k) is going strong.

SoCalKen 09-07-2009 06:06 PM

Y2K S with 38k miles, had exhaust manifold on both sides replaced by dealer under warranty (6 months apart). Other than that only oil changes. Driven to have fun every chance I get. BTW, lots of new tires also.
Ken

al83s 09-07-2009 10:44 PM

Im in.
2002 2.7 5-speed, 86k miles on the original motor.
RMS slowly leaks, but its gona have to wait till clutch goes. Most Porsches leak oil anyways ;) Just replaced AOS, otherwise - engine is trouble free.

It is driven year-around and driven hard. Car often sees triple digit speeds and seems to like it.
If you do most of the work yourself and buy parts online - this cars are not expensive or hard to maintain.

GoodJohnny 03-05-2010 04:21 AM

I'm in too. 1998 Boxster (with hardtop) Tiptronic with 115400 miles. No leaks of any kind. Runs great although sometimes Tip unit has mind of it's own. Last 10000 miles in 6 months, moderate driving habits. Performed major maintenance: antifreeze R/F/I, trans fluid (about 4 times in 6 months, long story), tune-up, all filters, oil service, new tires, new headlights, etc. Still returns low to mid 20's in CITY and high 20's to 30 MPG on HWY. Ocassionally drive the slop out of it. Drive in all weather, including recent snow (3+ inches).

pboxstercar 03-05-2010 04:35 AM

No Porche boxsters last over 20k - don't you people "google" IMS failures? :)

I like it... 91,000 here, just did an oil change and serpentine belt yesterday, and the starter's bindex is getting relubricated along with new o rings for the spark plug chamber next weekend... Runs like a charm, minus the constant need for expensive maintenance :)

bmx672 03-05-2010 07:10 AM

I bought my 2000 4 years ago with 40k. I have 60k now with no problems at all. I've never had to do anything... no drips, not even pads, NOTHING but oil changes & Tires, that's it. (KNOCK ON WOOD:). I have to do the 60k service, but that will be easy!

Boxtaboy 03-05-2010 07:12 AM

62k miles on my 01. No IMS failure yet.

Oil change every 12k-15k miles or 2 yrs, whichever comes first (Mobil 1 0W-40 only oil ever used). :D

Failures:
- 38k miles (cracked coolant tank; replaced under warranty)
- 58k miles (worn motor mount; replaced with new 987 mount)
- 59k miles (broken water pump; replaced with new one)
- Fall 2009 (cracked plastic rear window on soft top; replaced with OEM 03 glass windowed soft top)

2000 S 3.2

2000 S with 3.2 with a TIP. Bought it with 62,000 now at just under 70,000. Engine purrs great. Doing the 60,000 maintenance after finding the serpentine belt was original and decided to replace my rotors and pads.

super66 03-05-2010 09:46 AM

05 with 41K painfree miles. One new battery under waranty. More stereo issues than Engine issues but Bose gets off easy :D

Btw, 2 oil changes done at factory recommended intervels...okay I'm ready for the oil change assualt lectures but lets not hijack the thread :D

fusionist 03-05-2010 11:45 AM

2003 S just hit 16,000 miles. Never had a problem.

flyfisch 03-05-2010 11:53 AM

2002 72000 miles. No problems! Not going to worry about it.

Yoadrian 03-05-2010 12:15 PM

Just purchased my 99 Boxster three weeks ago. Rolled over 120,000 miles today on the way to work.

The car runs great. I am getting ready to replace two tie rods in a couple of weeks.

Only complaints so far are a leak behind/under the passenger seat and the keyless remote doesn't work.

I think the leak is due to clogged rear drain holes- still trying to figure out how to clear these. It's been too cold the last couple of weeks to open the top, so I am hoping to clear these out this weekend providing I am able to locate them. I am really nervous about trying to get the top into service mode like it says to do in the owner's manual. I'm worried that I will not be able to get it back together and this is my only form of transportation. lol

Not sure what is up with the keyless remote. I replaced the battery, so it lights up now when I press the buttons, but the doors will not lock/unlock and the trunk won't open using it either...

Stopped by the local Porsche dealership today and they wanted me to pay $65 for them to "diagnose" the problem with the remote.

tnoice 03-06-2010 05:13 AM

2004 boxster S 19,500 miles. No problems thus far (knock on wood). Mainly street driving however I purchased from a gentleman that enjoyed it in his garage far more than on the road. Had a slight oil seepage around the RMS (no drips on the floor), but went away after I drove it home from Arizona. Amazing car, absolutely love it!!

Boxtaboy 03-07-2010 02:47 AM

Awesome! Unless I missed something, 56 Boxster owners and only one engine failure among us...due to supercharging. Now those odds I like!

Keep these stories comin! :D

RandallNeighbour 03-07-2010 04:42 AM

Boxtaboy, not to burst your bubble, but if you read my comment you'd see that my motor was replaced before I bought the car. You also did not ask everyone if their motor had been replaced prior to purchase from a PO.

One thing that Porsche did was improve the internals of the M96 just a bit (not enough IMO) after the initial 97-99 cars were sold. So, if most everyone responding has a 2000 and up car, their motors are probably going to be more reliable, or they don't have the age on them that a 97 might have.

jmatta 03-07-2010 05:38 AM

Since this thread was resurrected, I've seen another failure first hand. Last fall, a friend's IMS let go after multiple tracking days and autocross events. It was a 2.7 and he made the unfortunate mistake of tracking the car with Mobil 1 0W40 in the case.

DaveE 06-05-2010 07:21 AM

Resurrecting thread with very early '97 Boxster 2.5 5 spd, all original and stock, 143,000 miles. Driven daily year-round in PA sun and snow.

Bradster 06-05-2010 08:02 AM

97 base Boxster. Just turned 80,000 miles. No leaks, runs perfectly. In my opinion, I could not ask for a nicer, more reliable, more fun, low maintenance car.

97 Boxster, 80,000 miles
97 Lexus LS 400 190,000 miles
2004 Lexus RX 330 78,000 miles

edbelton 06-05-2010 10:18 AM

1998, white-grey top, 41K, 2nd owner, only had to change tires, still on original brakes (front's will need to be replaced soon though). Keyless remote died (if anyone know a fix please advise), and that is pretty much it. Great car, easy and cheap to maintain if able to DIY, otherwise somehow expensive if taken to dealership for maintenance.

Dave. I like the sound of that mileage.

Current rolling 95k and would love to put another 50k on on the old girl.

DenverSteve 11-01-2011 07:21 PM

I traded my 2001 Base in with 90,000 miles. It only had the recommended maintenance done and the coolant reservoir replaced.

Kiss of death but here goes

2000 Boxster S 6 speed purchased in July 2008 with 76K miles. I don't know the entire history of the car.

I know have 99,600 miles on it and drive it daily (short commute).

No engine issues during my ownership.

I completed the 90K service this last year a bit at a time.

I replaced the coolant tank last summer, CV boots and rear wheel bearings in the last 6 months.

The car is squeak and rattle free and uses no oil between 8k mile changes.

Frodo 11-03-2011 04:56 AM

An update (since, apparently, we can no longer "edit" our posts):

2001 S, 61K miles (bought with 19K, in 2006), still running strong. Have done:
-alternator
-right front wheel bearing
-water pump/low temp thermostat
-front motor mount
-axle boots (rear axles)
-coil pack replacement on cylinder 1
-Two O2 sensor replacements
-basic maintenance, incl oil/filter changes every 5-6K miles
http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/c...MG_05071-1.jpg

944boy 11-03-2011 07:20 AM

2005 2.7 - 96,000mi and counting. Oil changes, filters, brakes, plugs, motor mount, water pump, AOS, light bulbs

Original motor, original shocks, Still original clutch even.

Daily driven in all weather, long haul trips, some track time.

Perfectlap 11-03-2011 07:55 AM

I picked up the car with 9K miles. No repairs other than a premature throttle body failure and a parking brake switch ($5 part $150 dealer labor :p)

... until major maintenance time rolled in at around the 60K mile mark (when it was 9-10 years old).
EDIT
add front control arm/tr's to list $1,650

1. coolant tank
2. alternator
3. starter
4. AOS
5. O2 sensor (decided to replace all, not cheap)
6. ignition thing that everyone gets sooner or later.
7. catalytic converters (replaced full exhaust including headers)
8. clutch
9. flywheel (OEM)
10. RMS (upgrade, original did not rip)
11. rear axle boots (both torn)
12. IMS (upgrade, original pristine)
13. shocks (haven't done rears yet, maybe after winter)
14. wheel straightening from two dented wheels.
15. replaced broken HID bulb (ebay $75, replaced both sides)
16. replaced serpentine belt (why not)
17. brake pads (only one set in 7 years, remarkable)
18. plastic window has 1" tear, do not want to replace with aftermarket due to stretching issues.
19. spark plugs at 50K miles.
20. at least one battery.
21. windshield (Safelite - Sekurit)
22. *Upgrades (Carrera 18" wheels, 18" 997 Turbo style for winter, GT3 seats, Litronics, GT3 I aero, Fabspeed, carbon Tequipment shifter, painted center console)

No matter which Porsche you buy, if you intend to keep it long term:
you will end up paying for it twice on repairs, maintenance and upgrades<--due to high cost of OEM parts. Add another 20% if you drive it in winter.
The nature of sports cars....these are not pickup trucks.

dghii 11-03-2011 08:17 AM

Its not just cars

Sounds like my home!

don't forget the mortgage interest. :p

The Boxster has taught me to stay away from Real Estate.
One is a depreciating assett, the other comes with a huge downside oppourtunity cost (relative to other investments).

springer123 11-03-2011 03:21 PM

1999 Boxster with 80,000 miles. Original motor "seized" and was replaced in 2003. It has about 50,000 miles on it. I have replaced the RMS, and IMS cover only, with the updated versions, clutch, and coolant tank.

thstone 11-03-2011 04:10 PM

My '99 has 98,000 miles with everything original in the engine. Still runs like its brand new. And I track it a lot. Overall extremely reliable.

Fact or fiction… The Jägermobile has 222,222 miles on it?

So close to having 222222 miles on 11-11-11, maybe I need to let it sit for a day just so I can say that.

MileHighBoxster 11-09-2011 06:28 PM

If that's what you have it's fantastic.

Yes it is... My daily driver (and road trip car)... Bought my Boxster when it had 30k miles on it. No major motor work.

I'll start but my mileage isn't all that impressive:

2003 Boxster S (3.2L) 15,000 miles and has had no issues. ;-)

Dave S.

I'm on my 3rd M96 car. I had an MY97 986. I sold it with 118k miles, engine never out of the car. had typical issues with ignition switch, cracked overflow tank, one water pump, leaking top into cabin under passenger seat, 1 clutch, but was probably close to needing the second when I sold it.

MY2000 996, sold with ~80k miles. ignition switch, 2 water pumps, idler pulley, leaking o-rings around the plugs at 60k miles service and that's it.

MY2001 986S. Now at 65k miles, purchased with 40k and at about 50k I invested in a Jake Raby 3.6 high performance upgraded motor. I had no leaks, and the IMS looked good when he tore it down. I did it for the extra uumph and because I want to keep the car as long as it still goes.

I've never had an oil leak of any kind in any of the three and never a major failure of any kind. The niggly little things that aren't cheap to fix, but considering I've been driving an M 96 car every day for over 10 years I would have to say my experience is that the cars are super reliable. I am thinking my next Porsche has to be a 996 Turbo. the prices are getting so low they are hard to overlook.

Chuck W. 11-10-2011 07:09 AM

Special ordered and bought my 2001 Boxster S new in '01. Just over 19,000 miles on it now without issue. Love the S!

Don't know if you are in SoCal but it seems that is almost always where I see these these very high mile cars with little work needed. I guess the roads must be good there too.

Here in the north east on the other hand, the temps and road conditions are all over the place to the extreme and the roads are also a mixture of disaster and smooth highway. I also think CA car culture leads to people looking after the cars a bit more than places like for instance much of Florida where so many fairly new cars seem to have terrible paint issues or sound awful.
