They may lack self-esteem. They place great value on things of little value. The finest automobile is of no value compared to the life or well being of a loved one, or their own, but they don't see it that way. They may see the car you drive as being more worthwhile then they themselves are, ergo, you are the much reviled master.
Or...
They're simply Aholes.
