				 worst noise ever! ToolPants Help!

I have a horrible belt noise coming from behind me! Very loud. I've always had a little squek at start up, but never this bad. No matter what speed or what rpm, loud belt noise if I'm not applying throttle. Upon stopping, I can smell burnt rubber. Haven't drove since. Can I fix this myself? Anyone else had this problem? I would like to avoid a costly trip to the dealership to get this fixed! (the navy doesn't pay much, lol)

you know I've noticed the same squeal when I turn the ignition as well. Have you checked your oil level? My read out said I was 1 tick below the the little triangle, I foolishly ignored it since I was going to have the oil changed. But Friday it was at two ticks below so I quickly pulled over and added a quart of Mobil 1 5-20This morning, still a squeal. Hmm.....
Also I was getting a similar sounding squeal on my Miata when putting the car into 2nd gear. I only bring it up because of the need to depress the clutch to turn the engine on a Boxster (or German cars).

sugest a trip to the dealer. Sounds like a drive belt (alternator and other accessories. This is a bear to get to and repair unless you know how and have the right tools!

If you think the problem is from the belt area then you need to remove the service cover and see what is going on.
Most common is a bad bearing in one of the pulleys.

			Tool Pants,
Is there any infomation or illustrations on how to remove your Poly Rib Belt? I was told to start thinking about changing the belt around 50,000 to 60,000. Do you have any more photos like the nice one above possibly showing the removal of the belt?

warmed up the car parked it and fired it up again to check on this squeal at start up. Only occurs when the engine is cold. Is this normal? (This is my first Boxster winter) Car has 12,000 miles and one oil change.

Finally got it to make the noise again yesterday...car has to really warm up for it to happen. Definately not the belt...I think its the altenator. How much does this cost I wonder...

unfortunatly bruce, i have ran out of time. Going out to sea at the end of this week, and I won't be returning until mid april. Duty calls! I'll post the final solution to this problem in a few months when I take it in...until then, she sits.
