To replace exhaust is it safe to only use 2 jack stands?

I've never put my Boxster on jack stands. I recently acquired some Maxspeed Headerss with Cats and secondary bypass pipes. It seems like a pretty simple straight forward installation. I've read through all the posts on jacking and I couldn't find any answers concerning using only 2 jack stands. I have a hydrolic floor jack and two jack stands capable of supporting 3 tons each. Is it safe enough to only jack up the rear of the car or am I asking for trouble? The idea of being under 3000lbs scares the crap out of me.

Thanks,

Tim

You can also use the center rear jacking point. Place the jack here...

with a piece of wood to distribute the load and then place the jack stands at the 2 rear lift points. My floor jack is not low profile so I back the car onto 2 pieces of 2x8 wood to raise it up a little bit so I can move the jack handle enough.

Just be sure to chock the front wheels for safety's sake.

Leave the floor jack in place with some tension on it. Chock are good. If I have to take my floor-jack out for access, I usually add 1 or 2 cheapo jack stands (from a box store) and wedge somewhere out of the way.

You might consider using ramps if you're only doing the exhaust. Thet tend to be sturdier than jack stands and are easier to use. Plus, I share your fear of being under a 3000 lb. car, and ramps frighten me less than jack stands.
