Canadian cars are more pricey, can I buy a US car?

Can I buy a car in the states and only pay tax on it? The car in Canada is 30% more expensive than in the US. I guess Porsche wanted a certian amount in $US, so the Canadians had to pony up an additional 30% due to the low dollar. Now that the dollar is near 85c to the American, paying that 30% hike {so the original buyers don't take a bath} seems lame. If I buy a US car for say 20K {24k Canadian}, will customs charge me the difference {10ish thousand Canadian} from the Canadian price? Do you follow me?

A customer of mine brought back a boxster from Florida to Regina,Sask( I'm considering doing the same thing) and said it was a rather painless experience... will try and get in touch with him to find about the ins and outs of it all. What part of the country are you located in??

Thank you for your reply, I am in Nova Scotia. I would be very willing to travell to get the car I want. It's slim pickin's here. Can you also ask how he shipped the car? I am searching information on that topic as well.

Thanks again.

They shouldn't charge you the difference in price. As long as you have the paperwork for puprchasing the car, they will charge you tax on what you actually paid for the car. Of course, my experience is only from state to state (bought the car in Texas, shipped it to New York), but I can't imagine that it would be much different in that regard.

Ask Brucelee, he might be able to help you out. I would have a very low opinion of inter-national commerce if they charged what they THINK should be charged, and not what actually went on.

My $0.02

Yes I was thinking it should be straight forward. When the tax is paid, I assume it will be the tax from the state I purchased in. And when I get home, I will just register the car I guess. < I'll check that on Tuesday. Well my day is brighter now, thanks guys. Are there any more tips/ hints you guys can provide?

I assume the words at the end of your post and the pictures are for the car you have for sale?

If so, it's not what I'm looking for. Good luck with the sale, I'm sure there are people out there who want what you have but don't want to go through the work to have it done. < A selling point for any man on the planet.

This is a "copy & paste" from my Thread in the Cars for sale/ wanted forum.

I am looking for a 1998 Boxster base model with out any options {other than a hard top and perhaps leather seats < I would need a h/t and would like leather seats}. I do not need a mint, low miles/ kms car. The only requirements are 1, full service records and 2, the car must be mechanically sound. The car can even have a rebuilt motor or some light scratches/ scuffs. I will pay book value.

I would like a light exterior colour and a light interior colour. {EI: Silver ext. w/ beige int.} That isn't written in stone, just a preference. Also it pretty much has to be a manual shift, or the car must be below book value. Shipping within North America isn't a problem, so if you have a car that is close to this description reply to this thread, there's no need to be shy.
