Ahh...yes I forgot about the old 2.0L engine in the S2000. Since they increased the displacemnt( in 04 I think) to 2.2L it no longer has the highest specific output. Also the 1.3L rotory engine in the Rx8 deserves an honorable mention because it truly has the highest specific output of any NA production engine @ around 180hp per liter. Ok, I retract my previous statement of the GT3 having the highest specific output ever, but I do believe it has the highest output of any NA piston driven engine currently in production. If anybody can find a current production vehicle that meets the above criteria and bests 115hp per liter I'd like to see it.

Yeah, but if you go by equivalent power strokes instead of volumetric displacement, the 13b Rotary is a 2.6L engine.

Doesn't the rotary engine weight like 100 lbs or so. I saw one once out of the car and it looked tiny to me.

Yeah, it's extremely small and light. About the same size as an old 1600cc VW engine.

It's a little heavier than that, the rotor housings are steel. But it is pretty light and small. The simplicity is the real beauty of the rotary. Think about everything spinning, orbiting and sliding in a piston engine. The rotary has just 3 rotating parts.

Lets not forget that the GT3 motor uses the "old school" split crankcase design (from the air cooled days, very similar to a recip aviation motor) which has been proven since the 962 days. The GT3 motor has nothing in common (other than displacement and being water cooled) with the M96 motor in the other cars.
