2002 Boxster key

Add me to the group of who only got one key with purchase. I'm planning on getting another key head and blank from Suncoast, but I need advice on if its worthwhile. Here' s the scenario:

1. I purchase the key head and blank; then get it programmed at dealer for $150

2. A day later, I lose the key.

From what I've been told, I would then need to take the car to a dealer to get it reprogrammed, making the lost key inoperable. The only advantage (after retrieving the spare key) would be being able to immediately drive the car to a dealer to get it reprogrammed (hopefully within hours), vs having it towed to a dealer, ordering a new key (or getting it from Suncoast), and then waiting for it to arrive and get programmed (days).

If this is correct, it seems to justify having the spare (programmed) key now. Please advise.

I am confused about your, "scenario." So your saying if you get the key and get it programmed, then lose it, you would get your original key and car reprogrammed to make the lost key inoperable?
Then you find the key you lost and get it reprogrammed?

I think your making this too complicated. If you lose the key somewhere you will be able to find it again, there is no need to worry about it being taken by someone who will try and steal the car. And if you lose the key in public, who ever finds the key will not know which Porsche it goes too. Plus, if your in a small town with only a few Porsches whoever finds it will most likely give it to the police.

I would advise that you keep the white tag the key comes with so if it needs to be reprogrammed it can be, and I would not worry about it. Getting the dealer to reprogram all your keys and car costs a lot.

I never find the lost key. Sorry about making my last post complicated; here's a rehash:

If I have two programmed keys and lose one, the only way to ensure the car doesn't get stolen is to take the car to a dealer and get it reprogrammed so that the lost key will no longer work.

Unfortunately there are areas in this city where people would not turn in a lost key to the police.

I received one key with my car and decided I needed a backup key. Sunset Imports in Oregon might sell you a new keyhead and key blank for less than Suncoast.

Do you live in a very small town where you own the only Porsche? That's the only condition under which I would have my car reprogrammed and buy new keys. Don't let this worry you as much as being stranded because your key electronics went out on you or you simply misplace your key (which you'll eventually find under the bed or beneath the cushions in the couch) and need to drive somewhere.

A missing key can be deleted from the control unit under the seat, so that if it shows up it cannot start the car.

2002 Boxster Key

Thanks, Tool Pants! That's the answer I was hoping for. My concern wasn't with misplacing the key in the house (in which case I'd just drive my other car until I eventually found it), but losing it somewhere away from home.

Thanks again for all replies!
