Where do you park your Porsche?

Just for fun, I was thinking about how I will park my car far away from other people, because it runs the risk of dings, which are unacceptable to us...so! How do you park your car? Just anywhere and not think about the doors of other cars or do you take the caring route, parking away from all others and flyaway grocery carts? I park my car far away and walk, no dings yet :)

eqs 04-26-2008 05:41 PM

Always, far away and walk - all my cars. Once a long time ago, parked "normally" in a close spot and the silly lady (just happened to be a lady, ladies) opens her door randomly and dings my door right when I'm sitting in car waiting for my wife, and admits it, and says she'll pay for any repairs.......then denies it at the insurance place. In the end she had to pay, but the nerve...

Downright liar. No more, far away and walk. It's good to walk anyways - last night I did this with my wife for 20y and held hands - how sweet, I know. Everyone hates dings and if you don't, well....

Cheers :)

Speaking of ladies.....

I once returned to my car and found a note under my windsheild wiper:

"Sorry I broke your tail light, please call me xxx-xxx-xxxx."

When I called her, she said: "I always back my Cadillac up until I gently touch the car behind me." "Your tail light must be very cheaply made!"

LoveBunny 04-27-2008 01:55 PM

I try to park in the safest spot possible. Unfortunately, I often have to park in very crowded garages downtown and there aren't the safest options. I do my best though.

My friend's dad used to baby his 928 and always park it on an end spot. One day somebody side swiped him.

jmatta 04-27-2008 03:07 PM

In the garage...I don't trust people period. A door ding on my black car would stick out like a sore thumb. My daily driver (Jeep Grand Cherokee) wears the scars of the world on it's sides...and I always park away from masses and walk; really irritates me that people are so careless and don't give a crap about others.

eqs 04-27-2008 03:19 PM

Yep, I'm w/you 100%. But I always think pos - look at all us "good" Pcar owners. We're the good people, because we care about our cars and others cars.

Oh yah, pedal to the metal! Pcars rock!

And yeah, it seems to happen from time to time, you park a mile away and still, some silly tu_d parks beside you when he has 500 other slots to park in.....Amazing.

Anyways, you got to love that Pcar! I read some other poster noting the truth....other cars seem "broken" compared to Pcars.

Cheers

I park a ways out and walk, but a couple of other suggestions.

1. When I can, I parallel park along a curb rather than in lot so nobody can open a door into my baby, and

2. If I do park in a lot, I look for a space where no one can park on the right side of my car. That's because of lot of people parking have just the driver in the car, so it reduces the odds of getting a door ding.

Had my Box for a year now and so far, so good.

Bob Z. 04-28-2008 10:15 AM

Even at work, as far as way from everyone as possible:

unklekraker 04-28-2008 11:20 AM

This is what i use everytime i park outside :D :D :D

I detest dings!

So far I'm good.

I try to park in the boonies but some joker does always end up parking RIGHT next to ya there.

I don't drive to movie theaters with Foxy.

Work is probably the second worst place to acquire dings.

I never take up 2 spots -that invites the keyers.

I bought my DD thinking, "this car is for dings -I don't car if it gets beat up." I WAS WRONG! I don't even like getting dings in that 12 year old champion! (I love my Acura TL -as boring as it is).

Dings are automotive acne.

gmboxster 04-28-2008 06:30 PM

People nowadays are so inconsiderate of others. Therefore I am very careful where I park. I wish others would indeed follow 'the golden rule'. We would all be much better off and happier if they did.

6speed 04-28-2008 06:45 PM

Far far away!! Its healthier to walk , My harley f250 also gets parked away from people!!

dcporsche99 04-28-2008 08:19 PM

Looks like Bob Z has it about right. But no matter how careful I try to be, there's always that one **swipe, as eqs mentioned, that always wants to park next to me. Since I already have a few dings, I'd rather not add to my collection. So, if I can't find a reasonable parking spot, I'd rather not park and run that particular errand for that day....it can wait for when I have my DD w/ me. ;)

70Sixter 04-29-2008 09:28 AM

Another vote for far away.

Also nowhere near a shopping cart return area and always on the uphill side of a lot. My former DD MX-6 got tagged by a cart rolling down into it.

It also got hit by the door of a fat lady's car whilst parked in a far corner spot at a restaurant. She musta bought the weight/health benefits as some of you have mentioned. :(

cbenitah 04-29-2008 09:54 AM

Not my best parking job, but far away it is. . . . .

6speed 04-29-2008 10:35 AM

Those wheels look good what size?

cbenitah 04-29-2008 12:30 PM

19's

10.5 in the rear with 275-30-19

They are sold and I have now a new set on

hahaha wow! thats a funny yet sad story haha- hopefully she paid for the damage of the "cheaply made tail light"

My dad always parks as far as possible and his cars have been dented twice. Sometimes i think people do it no purpose i swear...just because its a nice car. I park my cars wherever and ive never had any dents on this or any of my previoous cars :)

LoveBunny 04-29-2008 01:38 PM

Unfortunately, having a nice car often does invite jerks to ding your doors or worse, no matter where you park. When my brother first got the Lexus he had he parked it on an end spot at the movies. Somebody keyed down the whole side of it. They even started over with a new line because the first one I guess they didn't feel was deep enough.

And I agree that parking in two spots invites things to happen. If it's in a crowded parking lot I've been known to leave a note. I figure if you want to park your car in a safer spot you need to be willing to walk to that safer spot and not take up two spots in a full lot.

edevlin 04-29-2008 01:50 PM

Its not much, but its a dry home for my boxster, its a 1 stall garage attached to the house,

Ed

LoveBunny 04-30-2008 02:01 PM

I consider myself pretty lucky to have gotten this spot yesterday. Today I ended up having to park between two huge trucks.

Nice lookin' car LB.

CT986S 04-30-2008 04:04 PM

I agree with 70Sixter - far away and always uphill. Another tactic is to park next to other upscale German cars, at least there is some level of respect for another's property.
Much to my SO's chagrin I have been known to turn down a restaurant if there are no "acceptable" parking spaces - "But Honey - it's a Porsche!". Her response is invariably:  If you call and cancel the reservation they appreciate it and don't hold it against you next time.

People are animals, but fortunately there is the Dent Wizard. The guy I used when I had the Miata really is a wizard.

I used to drive & park the boxster everywhere... never really thought about it, until I came out to the car parked in the Ybor city parking garage & it had a brick in the windshield. now the boxster stays in the garage & I drive my 87 jeep cherokee P.O.S. everywhere..

If I do drive the boxster, I park it where I can see it.. I am not really OCD over damage to the car, (I have beaten the lil' critter up on my own), but I hate it when people just get away with that crap fer nuttin...

I mean who smashes a windshield just cause its a Porsche, really?

Boxtaboy 05-01-2008 03:54 AM

Funny you should ask. Just this past weekend, I had to go to Home Depot to pick out a bunch of bathroom and kitchen supplies to be delivered to my home later on. I thought to myself, oh great...I'll be there for a couple of hours, and by the time I go back to my car, it'll have dings/scratches galore from folks in wagons and trucks opening their doors and scraping their supplies against my car. I park in a spot close to the entry/exit way, so that there are lots of people constantly passing my car. Well to my pleasant surprise, after a couple hours when I come out, I find there's absolutely no damage at all on my car. Yippee!!

So I throw some kitchen tiles I bought in my trunk, and drive home. Get home, and then while pulling out the tiles from my rear trunk, one falls on my rear spoiler, and scratches thru the clear coat. ARRGGGGHHH!!! Once inch scratch! I just can't win. :D

When I lived in Tampa I remember seeing some people almost get into a fight because their Camaro broke down in the exit lane of the Ybor garage. I never had a Boxster when I lived there so I never had the joy of parking it in that garage.

That's been my attitude. I think it depends on your view of your car. Because it's a fine, German machine and expensive some people view their cars as being "precious". The more precious, the more it will sit in the garage, get babied, and not get driven - and I assume the more carefully it will be parked.

I took my car in this week for paint. I'm adding a GT3 front, Gemballa GT side skirts, and a Gemballa GT rear bumper. The "preciousness" of my Boxster just jumped up several notches and I guarantee you that my attitude about parking the car will be very changed once I get it back next week. I'd better get used to parking far away and walking. :p

My main concern will be with nights out on the town. I like to take my Assistant out dancing, but the parking is less than ideal. I'll be concerned about parking the in a dark lot with a bunch of drunks hanging around. I think my best bet is to just park it right in front of the bar on the curb, under the lights. With all of the smokers out front, the car will certainly get noticed and get attention, but hopefully not keyed with so many people around.

nola911 05-01-2008 09:18 AM

This is my office parking lot. Im the dot in the WAYYYYYYYYY back.. A good 50 or so feet from anyone else.

I used to date a guy that had a new Z. He parked it like that in front of a bar once, right outside the front door up on the curb. When we went back to the car after being there an hour or so the car was covered in spit. :(

eqs 05-01-2008 02:42 PM

Probably not the best idea Kirk, all it takes is one time and you're going to wish you didn't. Maybe take your Assistant's ride, or get a cab?

Anyways, have a drink for me too, when you're there, Cheers

I can park 500 feet from the nearest car, take two spaces, park at an angle, put orange cones around the car with POLICE tape around it and there will still be an idiot that will park 18 inches from me!
People are idiots, we must live amongst them with our cars, therefore we must also expect dings and scratches.

My friend's husband got a Saab and parked it in his garage at home and in a lot at work for the most part. He still thought it was all shiny and pretty with no dings until he realized his kids had been getting out of the SUV that also would be parked in the garage and opening the doors on his Saab. Then he was just like, oh, well, had to happen eventually.

it's parked in the barn to keep the old guy's company! i spent $2000 on the 944 18 months ago and it travelled 5 miles and i spent $1500 on the bmw 325 cabriolet which travelled 500 miles?!?!? why do i do it ....WHY do i do it?

Look, my car made a friend yesterday

another thing

If I do happen to park next to two cars, I always strategically park my car on a slight slant so that the passenger door on my left and the driver's side door on the right leave plenty of space *so far, so good* :)

eqs 05-17-2008 06:05 PM

I have to admit I've been living dangerously lately. I've been lazy and park close(r) than I should. But what's a guy to do, lug 24s a block and a half?

I know I'm going to get it someday, but, what the ____ .

Cheers  Literally and figuratively :D

And LB, hummm, if that's a single dude? ........ ;)

That's what I was wondering! But the car was there when I parked and when I left about 30 minutes later. It was in the building where our office is though, so who knows, maybe I'll see the car again and can always hope it's a cute single guy owner.

What kills me is when I park out where there are no other cars, and when I come back - there is one car - parked next to me! Why next to me? Why not in a space with no nearby cars? It kills me

RobZ 07-17-2008 06:50 PM

Just think of paintless dent repair (PDR) as maintenance. A hundered bucks or so once a year will keep things straight. Think of it as your cars chiropractor. I'm getting some PDR tomorrow.
