Is it just me?
Is it just me or do drivers in SUVs and Pick Ups not understand that their cars are not supposed to be driven 80+mph?
I'm sitting here in my SPORTSCAR going 70-85mph in the fast lane and I'm getting high beamed and tail-gated by some idiot going warp speed in a 6,000 lb. Denali. WTF?! Man that p's me off... |
Each morning in Dallas a battle unfolds between warp speed SUVs and left lane sleepers yapping on their cell phones. Meanwhile I sit in traffic jams caused by their accidents and dream of installing rail guns in the front fenders. Hey, it works in video games.
|
It happens to me all the time, I go "about" the speed limit and someone in a truck passes me going 90mph on there cell phone. It drived me nuts, I like the fender mounted gun idea.
I had one guy get behind me in the fast lane. He flashed his lights so I look in the mirror and his hood is flapping up and down with only the safety latch holding it down then I see him lower his coffee cup and he's on the cell phone too. I wonder if he is the one who crashed into the center divider that day? |
Hi, I own 1 Boxster and 3 SUV'S (tough winters up here, Boat, Trailer "Trash" :D ) and have a totally different approach when driving one or the other, I learned this with my first SUV when taking an exit at 80 KS and loosing total control, when you wipe out with these 6000 LBS vehicles you close your eyes and pray to God you don't kill anyone. This happened 2 months after i purchased the first killing machine and never will I forget that day or ever drive as if I was invincible when in one of these tanks.
Some people learn and move on and some just die ignorant Now the only place i show off my Testosterone is in bed with my wife :D :D |

What pisses me off the most is people who drive their SUV's and Vans (even worse) 85-90 miles and hour on the highway while on their cells phone or eating or whatever and then i look over and i see kids in the back... i dont understand that... |
how did george carlin put it.....?
ever notice how everbody driving faster than you is an idiot and everybody driving slower is an a-hole? |
imho, if you're in the fast lane, and someone comes up behind you, you should move over and let them by. just because they're stupid and want to kill themselves in an suv, doesn't give you a right to hinder their progress.
the fast lane should always be slower traffic keep right. if you're in a gt3 rs doing 190mph and a mclaren comes up behind you at 205 then you should keep right and let him by. conversely, if you're in your boxster doing 80 and some douche in an suv is doing 70 and won't let you by, well then you're just going to have flash to pass and/or pass on the right because the cell phone and coffee and kids may be too big of a distraction to notice you flashing your beams. |
I just love how in winter, some people w/ SUVs and trucks don't seem to know that all-wheel drive only helps you go, and does nothing to help you STOP.
|
I dont care if I am going 80 in my boxster or my SUV with a 7k lb boat while eating taco bell and talking on my cell phone and trying to watch dvds on the nav screen; what "p"s me off is the hot shot in front of me who won't yield because he thinks his "sportscar" should be the fastest thing on the road.
I flipped a range rover a few years ago at 70mph after getting side swiped in the driver's door. I tell you one thing, I am glad I did not have the same situation in my boxster because I wouldnt be here to talk about it. If your not riding the hard curves, the heavy SUV is just as stable and capable to drive in a straight line on the freeway as your car. |
It really does not matter what you drive or what is behind you. If you are on the fast lane in your Porsche and a pink Escalade is behind you that is going faster, move to the right! It does not matter if you feel their vehicle is not suppose to be driven that fast, that person could be Mario Andretti and I'm sure he can out drive you in a Denali against you in your Porsche. There are many skilled drivers on the road and regardless of what they drive, they have as much right as anyone on the fast lane. If they are being unsafe, more reason to move out of the way. It's attitude like that that gives people the wrong impression about Porsche drivers.
I would really think that people who track their car would understand this concept more than anyone. When you are on the track and a faster driver is behind you in a p.o.s car do you not move to the right? |

To quote John Muir in the 1969 "How To Keep Your Volkswagen Alive, A Manual Of Step By Step Procedures For The Compleat Idiot" (a recommended read even if you don't own a VW beetle - much more than a typical car manual, very funny with some great illustrations): "If we all constantly drive as if we were strapped to the front of the car like Aztec sacrifices so we'd be the first thing hit, there would be a helluva lot less accidents." That quote comes to mind everytime I drive by an accident. |
I think we here in the great state of Kalifornia have you guys cold. Our state has these nice 6 lane "Freeways" that allow our SUV drivers to not only do 90MPH but to cross the lanes with total abandon.
Now, a lot of these birds end up on their roofs and off the road, but hey, they FEEL safe when they are up high and all. Really, I do think this sense of isolation that you get in these huge vehicles is deceptive. Add the cell phone, coffee, radio, DVD in the back, etc. and who can actually focus on the road? And at 80-90 MPH, they take off like a rocket!!!!!!!!!!! I once saw a young lady putting on her eye liner and driving. I assume she had the wheel with her knees but who knows. She was pretty though. Hey, I am a guy, I HAD to look. :D |
Last summer I saw a rolled SUV, rolled biggie-wheel pickup or rolled Honda Civic boyracer every day on the I-15 in the IE. I am sure they were all careful drivers going at or near the speed limit though...not! I don't think I have ever seen a rolled Porsche on the freeway. I have been upside down hanging from the straps before and it sucks. Drive safe guys and gals.

Why not? Because those cars won't flip over and kill 20 people and they have the braking power capable of coming to a complete stop from 80mph in less than two miles. But if a guy driving a 5 or 6,000 pound SUV or Pick up truck doesn't have the common sense to understand that his car was not designed to make sudden moves to the left or right at those speeds and that the weight of his car will crush an innocent speed limit-abiding bystander like a sardine can then we need IQ tests for SUVs before they are sold. People who drive these cars at these speeds have to get their heads examined. |

I try to keep my idiot radar on at all times, and move away from any vehicle that doesn't seem to have a safe driver at the wheel. Driving tooooo slowly, driving too fast, not centered in the lane, changing lanes without awareness that there are other cars on the road... These people concern me. So I may speed up and move to another lane, slow down, let them pass, anything it takes to distance myself. And yes, in my neck of suburbia there are an awful lot of young women in huge cars that don't seem to realize they are driving. And always when I bend my neck to see what an idiot looks like, they are on a phone. Grrrrr.

Although the funniest thing I ever witnessed was not at highway speeds. I was at a Target and saw a Hummer H2 driven by what had to be a 5'0" 115# blonde attempting to park the beast. As I walked by she got the front bumper about two feet into the space and started the Austin Powers golf cart dance with the thing. I came out of the store literally 10 min later and she was just putting the thing in park as I walkedby. |

Oh, and not that you are judgmental about petite blondes, right? :) |

To me it seems like guys driving mini-vans are the worst. They are usually two months overdue for their last haircut and have a wife in the passenger seat that is twice his size and girth, throw in three or four dirty faced kids jumping around in the back. Its like life is over for them and they drive in a fantasy world. They do not seem to care if they die or take out the car next to them. When I see one of these guys behind me I just get out of his way and thank my lucky stars.

We have a place in Flagstaff, a 175 mile drive on mostly freeways (Hwy 10 and 17), that gains nearly 6000' in elevation from here in Phoenix. 17 is quite winding, two lanes each way, and has major grades, with a 75 mph speed limit. We have a Toyota Sienna minivan, I set the cruise for 80 mph when I'm on 17 and stay out of the left lane as much as possible. When I drive the Boxster or the M3, when I'm on cruise, I set it for 80 to 85 mph, and will take it up to 100 or slightly over from time to time. I never tailgate, I never race anyone, and I let anyone who comes up behind me past immediately, regardless of if they're acting like a ********************head or not.
I'm regularly blown off the road by large pickup trucks on this road, usually Ford F150/250/350's, Chevy Silverados, and Dodge Rams. Typical speed for these guys is 95 to 110 mph. I regularly notice trucks that pass me with underinflated tires - and don't forget summer temps here are generally 105 deg F and higher. Predictably, you often see these guys on the side of the road with blowouts, or in the ravine with the helicopter nearby to fly them out. Evolution in action. |
Speaking of evolution in action, there is one school of thought that suggests that overall, governments are working against evolution with their propensity to try to "equalized=" everything and to try and protect everyone and keep everyone safe.
Witness the warning labels on gas cans that tell us that yes, they might contain flammable fluids???????? If we don't allow really dumb folks to take themselves out of the action, they will keep having more dumb kids, etc. When you drive alot, you see this theory in action. :D |
I don't have an SUV, but I do have a heavy, massive LS400.
When I drive 80+ in it, the wife doesn't seem to mind. When I drive the same speed with her in the boxster, she complains. It's all about road feel. The SUV driver's don't feel the road nearly as much as we do in a Porsche. So, they drive faster. There you have it in a nutshell. Fix this problem by driving much faster or stay out of the fast lane I guess. |
Why everyone needs an SUV is a mystery. They are pigs when it comes to fuel economy. At today's prices it must cost almost $75 for fill the tank up. Yet you see every morning the parade of single drivers and SUV's. I agree that some of the SUV crowd have a death wish. Once returning from Canada, on an icy road a MB SUV passed us going super fast. Five minutes later he was upside down in the middle of a ditch. The IQ thing could have been a factor.

Some of the scariest **************************** drivers I have ever encountered were driving huge trucks. I just don't understand it.

When taking a roadtrip to FL a few years back my friend was taking a turn driving my Audi. He was driving like a maniac, well over 100 MPH (he got two tickets on the trip BTW). Anyway, he passes some dude in a minivan and the guy must have felt has manhood was being insulted because he decided to try to catch up to us in his minivan. Didn't quite work. |
Quote:
No offence but why did you allow your "friend" to put your life endanger in your own car? Just a thought. :) |
Hi, It's not our fault we were all created this way by default. :ah:
Yo, Yo, Bling ,Bling, Peace Dudes :D http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...rch_kruger.jpg From a peacock’s showy plumage to a 20-year-old’s blinged-out SUV, males compete aggressively for female attention. But their aggression comes at a price: males of all mammalian species tend to have shorter lifespans than females. “The sex difference in lifespan has been recognized since at least the mid-18th century,” says Daniel J. Kruger, a research scientist in the University of Michigan School of Public Health and the Institute for Social Research. “Women live longer in almost every country. It originates from our deep evolutionary history.” Kruger and co-author Randolph Nesse, a professor of psychology and psychiatry and director of the UM Evolution and Human Adaptation Program, believe the difference in life expectancy stems from the biological imperative of attracting mates. Because females generally produce far fewer offspring than males and invest more in those offspring, males typically compete with one another for female partners—and their competition leads to risky physiology and behavior, such as physical sparring. Modern lifestyles exacerbate the gap between life expectancies. Shaped by eons of sexual competition, male immune systems are somewhat weaker than their female counterparts, and male bodies are less able to process fat. Men are also more vulnerable to behavioral causes of death—smoking, overeating, reckless driving, violence. Kruger notes that males who have a relatively lower status or who lack a mate engage in a riskier pattern of behaviors in an attempt to get ahead. |
Young men are inherently more reckless and engage in much more risky behavior. They also defend to the death why this is a good thing.
This fact takes some of the sting out of aging, at least for me. :D |
over 50 % of the vehicles on the road are pick ups, mini vans and SUV's. And some of the folks drivin them are better drivers than the folks drivin sport cars.... and of course vice versa
I also ride a motorcycle and in general pick up drivers as a whole are better drivers. Volvo drivers in the upscale burbs the worse. There are two types of SUV drivers. The timid type who bought it for security and traction in snow. They go too slow and eben slower in the snow and can't park the thing. The second type is the road warrior who bought it for it's rugged aggressive image and drives it that way. The BMW's, Volvos, Saabs, Audi's and for some reason Maxima's got their fair share of idiots drivin them. If I had to generalize, it's a lack of respect and sense of entitlement. Of course, they say the same thing about us when we go by in a pack of harleys. LOL when I drive my porsche, i notice that folks try harder to just pass me. I don't know if it's subconscious but there must be an unseen tally sheet around and you get points for passing a porsche. |

Well, for one thing it was several years ago, so I guess I had a little less sense than I do now. And one of the times he got pulled over I was asleep and didn't know how fast he was going. I don't know if it was as a direct result, but I had to replace the oxygen sensors in this car right after he drove it. I haven't let him drive my car since. btw, he never paid the tickets and ended up getting arrested and spending two days in jail the next time he was pulled over. |
Quote:
He didn't pay the tix. Suprise, suprise. Glad you are OK. I doubt you would let that happen again. :D |
yeah, live and learn. And the oxygen sensors ended up costing around $2k I believe and my car ran like crap until I replaced them. I never had proof that his driving my car so fast was what caused them to go bad, but it was certainly suspicious that it started to happen on this trip. And one of the cops who pulled him over said smoke was coming out of the back of my car. So I ended up paying the $2k for the oxygen sensors but he spent 2 days in jail and his court costs were about the same.
Now he rides a bike. He's been hit on his bike at least 5 times. The first couple times I felt sorry for him, but then I saw how he rides his bike, which is downright scary. |
