Mods for 2008
Alright guys, I think I have finally decided what I am going to do to my car this spring :
Turbowerx Headers :
http://turbowerx.com/Products/986_Headers/986_Headers.html
Softronic Chip :
http://www.softronic.us/buynow.php
Imagine Auto Stage 1 ( Exhaust / Intake ) :
http://www.imagineauto.com/boxster01.htm
Headers - $800.00 - 25 hp
Chip - $900.00 - 18 hp
Exhaust / Intake - $1400 - 10 hp
Total - $3100 - 53 hp
I do realize that the hp claims are probably exaggerated, but I'm sure the car will feel a lot different with headers, chip, intake, and exhaust.
I am open to any comments / questions / concerns ???
Thanks,
Nick

well I dunno if I'm just a skeptical type guy but I figure if a mere $3K could get you 50HP then allot of people would be doing this. The crazy thing is that 50HP doesn't really feel like 50HP...feels more like 30. I think your mods will be below 30HP. And with header and exhaust upgrades you won't really feel the new ponies until you are moving. The car will be nearly the same when launching from a standing start.
Personally I'd sooner spend the muney on coilovers or lighter wheels or premo rubber. If you want more power, take a hard look at getting into a 2000 S.
Might require $5K instead of $3K but you'll get what you want in the end.

This is funny stuff seeing that I just emailed NickCats a few minutes ago asking what he had in mind for this spring. Just reading about this is getting me excited for the upcoming autcross season.
NickCats, don't forgot to add a few $$ for race tread.
My modifications to stay in the same class as you and DJ will be limited (wedding and grad school) but my new race rubber (wider than stock) should be sufficient to bump me into ASP with you two. I'm also going to ask for a lower stress bar for my birthday.

I say go for it, because I'm sure the car will feel and sound improved after the mods. However, after looking at the IA stage 1 package, it is obvious that they are just repackaging a Dansk sausage muffler with an EVO intake.
If you're interested in saving a few bucks, you can simply buy the Dansk exhaust at various places for $700-$800 (I got my Dansk pressed sport with super sound tips new for $750), and the EVO retails for $380, so total, you can get them together for around $1100-1200, instead of the $1400 that IA charges.

Total interior touch up is planned before summer driving season, including:
RUF Shift Knob - $349
Bumper Plugs painted Center Console - $399
GT3 Center Console Delete - $105
Alpine IDA X-001 Head Unit - $299
And of course while I've got the console out we'll sneak in a short shift kit and some other goodies

Perfectlap,
Sound advice ! Here's my thinking, in 3 years I will be ready to buy either a brand new Boxster or a used 911, so I figure I might as well throw some money at my 99 since I will have it for another 2 or 3 years.
I bought the Boxster and an engagement ring in 2006 so no fun money left and paid for the Nov 2006 wedding in 2007 so this is the first time in awhile I can do something fun with my bonus.
Basically what I'm looking for is a little more power for daily driving. The cost / benefit of wheels / tires to shave a couple of seconds off of my autocross times just doesn't make a lot of sense to me right now ( though it would be nice to not chew up my soon to be new street tires ).
I think the headers will provide a noticeable improvement, with the exhaust I am looking for better sound and two pipes in the back, the intake also for sound, and the chip for throttle response.
I can't wait to autocross either ! I miss driving my car period ( been over a month now ).
I did start snowboarding this year ( I bought a Burton ) so at least that kind of satisfies my autocross fix
Good point, Boxtaboy ! Thanks ( and I love the look of the super sound tips ).
Hammer, that shift knob is awesome !
Nick

Hey Nick,
Turbowerx dyno was a K & N drop in installed. So I bet you'd only get +1-2hp ontop of the dyno chart they provide.

Since we're on shift knobs....I just installed the silver horseshoe boot on my shift knob for a different look. Like it a lot:
Got it from this place that sells a lot of cool shift knobs. No affiliation, just a satisfied customer.

He's right about those prices. I've seen all those parts you have listed for allot less. Keep searching. I think you are overpaying for all those parts. But I like where you are going with the mods.

You just can't add hp gains from each individual mod. Doesn't work that way. So not only do have some likely inflated figures, but you've got some optimistic math. I'd be surprised if you got more than 20hp at the wheels with all those mods.

I am sorry, but 53HP for $3100 is not right. Your looking at 3-4HP maybe with the chip, 5-8HP if you're lucky with the headers, and maybe about 5-10HP with the exhaust/intake. It all depends, I am not an expert put I would say if you could get 10-15 more HP for that much your lucky.

Randall has proven with dyno charts of the gains he experienced with his 2.5L which were no joke. +15hp at the wheels from just exhaust and headers. Turbowerx claims to have found a better design for power, maybe they have.

KW v3 coilovers for sure
Che's suspension parts (toe links, control arms)
maybe a set of speedline wheels
GT3 front bumper (maybe 996 or 997)
Wish list:
head work (better flow)
Cams
or just pick up a 3.4 and do all the same.

I really prefer my center console. Not so much that it serves a functional purpose, but rather that the leg pads on either side keep my knees held in fun-tastic corner action

Not really, Blinkwatt is saying +15HP, confirmed with a dyno for both the headers and exhaust, which sits just around my estimates of 10-18HP for both of those. And even if my numbers are conservative, I think they are more realistic than 35HP.
The chip is the one I would be interested to see because I have heard of people only getting a few more HP with them in the Boxster.

Come on Nick-
Bite the bullet and get an '03-'04 S or step up to a 987.
You're not going to get the HP out of the '99 2.5 986.
Those numbers are very "aggressive".
