Help with oil leak !!!

Hello everyone,

I would like to say thanks to all of you for taking the time to look at my issue.

I have a 2000 Boxster tiptronic that developed a small oil leak (It is not the RMS)

It appears that it is coming from the rear right side axle. I looked a little closer today and it looks like engine oil.

My question is this:

Is the transmittion oil a different color or the same like the engine oil ?

according to the bentley manual, the tip uses hypoid oil for the differential. this oil has a peculiar odor, but is thicker than engine oil. But it looks like engine oil. the tip also uses atf oil. the atf oil that I've seen is red, but I've never had a auto or tip gearbox before. good luck

Check the Right side(passenger) for leaks either at the:

1.Spark Plug tube, 2. AOS tube, 3. Valve cover gasket

Is it possible that the tiptronic's oil cooler could be leaking?

Not the oil cooler. The valve cover is kind of wet but I can't see the connection since the heavy soiled area is around the rear axle

have you changed your oil recently? it could be the oil filler tube. follow it from the right side trunk on down.

Can't you just take it into the dealership for an estimate? Sounds like it should be addressed soon.

Oil was changed 8 mo ago. I took the car to an independent shop. It looks like the axle seal is leaking however he never heard of an rear axle seal leak.

It is a very slow leak that's why it is so hard to tell its origin.

If it wasn't for the occasional drip to the muffler I would have left it alone.

Oil leaks originating either from the: 1. Spark Plug tube 2. AOS 3. Cam/Valve cover WILL seep, and eventually drip on the muffler

CV boot grease is more like gunk than a liquid oil, so I don't think so.

CV boot is tight. AOS has been replaced no leaks there.

I cleaned the affected area yesterday. I am going to put some miles on the car and then look around some more. Hopefully something will surface.

I had an oil leak that found the exhaust.. turns out it was a failed "oil pressure switch". Located on the passenger side of the car. Saw the leak on the bottom. Saw the failed piece from looking down on the motor from the top.

Mine was a bit more worrysome because of course, with an increase in revs brought an increase in the leak. Eventually lots of smoke from the oil burning off on to the muffler/cats.

Ok, here is the update as promised. After driving the vechicle for about 60 miles it looks like it is the axle area that is leaking. Not the CV boot. As far as I can tell it looks like it is coming from the differential shaft as it exits the casing. I am not sure if there is a seal or what in that area. I sure can't seem to find any posting anywhere regarding similar experience.

Anyone that worked in that area before willing to share tips I would greatly appreciate it

Ok. Here is the update.
Car is fixed. My diagnosis was right on the money, leak was coming from the rear differential.
Rector Porsche come through. They did a great job. $700 for it.
Hector at the service department is the guy to talk to. Hector thanks again!
