What is the sensor front and center on the dashboard?

Trying to figure out what this thing does. Car does not have auto-dimming mirrors, or rain sensing wipers, or automatic headlights. So what is this sensor? Climate control?

Thanks... I've only driven the car a couple times so far as it is my fiancee's daily driver. Got a ride home from the airport in it last night, and while sitting in the passenger seat got to wondering what that thing was.

The little lady is def happy... she called me this morning to tell me she got a nod from a Maserati driver on the way to work. This is a big change for a girl who used to not care at all about her cars. Now she notices lots of little details The Porsche bug has gotten under her skin!

I bet she doesnt know about the special Windows and Windshield that Porsche's come with... Standard on all Porsche's, any car you look at through the Porsche windows just do not look good anymore and you find yourself noticing your Porsche is better than everything you look at through those windows

Sounds interesting... What does the Solar sensor do for the A/C system?

Garage
^ How true!

I think the sensor is part of the alarm, not sure about the AC thing.

From Loren at RennTech :

The preselected temperature is controlled automatically. The interior temperature and air flow can be adjusted manually via two pushbuttons. The changes are shown in the display. Information from the outside temperature sensors, interior temperature sensor and the sun sensor is processed to regulate the interior temperature. The system can respond to rapid changes in the outside temperature and also takes into account that the intensity of sunlight has a major influence on the subjective temperature perception of passengers.

And from the 987 brochure :

As an optional alternative, you
can specify your car with a fully
automatic air conditioning system.
By means of a solar sensor,
the system additionally compensates
for the effects of ambient
light.

Awesome guys, thanks for the details.

Got to drive the car to work today as it needs to pass emissions this afternoon. Even in the rain this thing is a blast, though with the current low tread Falken Azenis, it breaks loose real easy on acceleration if you gas it good. Already have new Bridgestone all seasons on order. If we make it 12 months without a ticket it will be a miracle.

She already knew about the rose colored glass... I'm a hopeless Porsche addict. My neighbor calls my house the Porsche factory as there are 3 sitting here and I spend most of my spare time taking them apart and putting them back together. Also had a third 944 parts car for a while... I need a way bigger garage!
