Do I need new lug nuts only or both bolts and nuts?

The lug nuts of my front wheels are rusty, I am thinking of replacing them. See some one selling 20 nuts for around $25 on ebay, not sure they are good choice or not. Another question is:

Do I need lug nuts only or both bolts and nuts? The bolts are covered by the nuts, so even they are rusty, they won't be seen I guess.

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply bmussatti, I am a little confused, it looks like the ones listed in ebay are just for nuts, because they look so small:

So I guess I can still buy the half piece and attach them to the bolts?

No, as bmussatti pointed out, you need actual one-piece studs, not the more common lug nuts. Check the link he provided.

Thanks for the response, Padawan. The Porsche dealer will sell me for Canadian $8 a piece, looks like it is acceptable price. I will probably change them next spring when I swap my winter tires/wheels to the summer set in the dealer then.

Sounds like a good idea, but how long will they last before they start peeling off again? Also, when you put them back, how could you prevent some of the new paint from being removed by the wrench?

I have the solution for this, you place a small piece some saran wrap around the lug between it and the socket head before tightening it. One small piece per lug reuse is tough. You can also buy a fu fu plastic lined socket for about thirty beans, use the saran it works perfect.

That ebay auction seller for those nuts has got nuts for brains, The boxster does not use nuts in no way shape or form to hold the wheels on. We use wheel Bolts instead.

You guys are amazing!

Any tips how to remove the rust, sand it using sand paper?

Also, can I remove the bolts without using the jack? I mean only remove 4 bolts from 4 wheels, and repeat the same thing 5 times? of course, I won't drive the car when each wheel has one bolt missing.

I suppose you can do that just as long as you are not driving it till you put all the bolts back in.

When I owned my VW, the car came with black plastic caps to cover the unsightly bare metal lugs. I'm surprised Porsche doesn't include something like this, or provide chrome lugs instead.

Empty beer bottles make great painting holsters for lug nuts.
It's Friday night, so get busy "prepping"

I found another solution to use the caps that will fit both the bolts and the lug locks:

http://www.colorlugs.com/

Not sure how they will look and which color will be good for my silver car and the wheel. Red? Or maybe buy white ones then paint them silver?

take urs out and paint them, i painted mine, and even lasted trough the winter.
i then changed them to black.

easy way to do this, take a shoe box, and drill a few holes (20), then just stick the lug bolts in there, and spray away.

i scuffed mine up with steel wire.
