New Porsche Break-In Blues

I WILL follow Porsche's recomendation not to exceed 4200 RPM's for the first 2000 miles. But I'm up to 500 miles and it's starting to kill me. The higher the RPM's, the better this car sounds - I can't wait to get to the 2000 mile point.

Any suggestions to help me get through the next 1500 miles without losing my sanity?

Smile, relax and enjoy.

And drive as long as you can each day till 2000 hits that odometer.

Best of luck.

Baseball, plan a road trip!

I bought my car out-of-state (Dayton), and then did about 1,200 miles on the way home. Changed the oil. Did another 800 miles ASAP. I was done with the break-in in less than 3 weeks.

I feel your pain!

A roadtrip is a great idea. It won't take long to rack up the mileage if you go somewhere. I see you are in NY, go eat a lobster in Maine, go to the Hampton's for a nice weekend of sunsets over the beach.

OR, if you break the rules and redline the car.. I promise not to tell.

Man, that must suck. I normally never shift below 4200RPM.

If you really need some help copping, go to your local Porsche dealer and test drive one of there cars and take it over 4200 RPM, go rent a racing video game and play it with surround soundm or if you wanted to do it like Ferris Buller, you can jack up the rear tires and put a brick on the gas pedal, that might get you 2000 miles in a few days.

Best of Luck with the Brake in!

I didn't have to give this much thought, as I bought my car used (hope the original owner did follow the recommendation though ). Anyhow, roadtrips are great for this purpose. I am in the san jose bay area, and have taken circuitous trips to big sur, yosemite etc. I am at slightly above 1k miles per month, without even driving the car daily - mostly weekend use!

OR, buy a few treadmills, saw off arms on one side, haul the boxster on, put it in cruise and let it go. Just be sure to hop in every few hours to vary the speed, change gears etc - you do want a proper break-in

Thanks for the advice - I'm going to schedule a road-trip. This time of year is a bit of a "no-mans-land" in the northeast. No foliage, cold and damp....

Anyone know of anything exciting going on in NY/New England in the next week or two? Something with flowers or art or something like that so my wife can get excited about it

You could look for a Boxster drive, or meeting. That may not excite your wife, but then you could always schedule a bed and breakfast or something.

Baseball, another forum member here did the break in schedule with a little latitude.

After all, your motor was redlined at least once or twice before it ever left Germany.

Winding it up once or twice between now and 2000 miles won't hurt your motor a bit. Taking it to redline every shift during the first 2000 miles is probably taking the idea way too far though.

Rest in the fact that you don't have a second hand boxster where the first owner ran it through the gears hard and long for the first days of ownership without a care that the engine was suffering. After all, he's not going to keep the car forever, so who cares?

Maybe that will help you enjoy the putting around for the next few months!

I agree with Bill though... You need a road trip something fierce.
