Boxster porous block question

I'm in the process of purchasing a 97 Boxster with only 4200 miles. It is in pristine condition, even passing the Porsche dealer here for an extended warranty. I am getting the warranty because of "rumors" about porous block problems in the 97 and 98's. Anyone heard more about this, or have good/bad experience?

All it means is that oil can seep through the metal casing. I was going to say with a 1997 someone would have noticed oil by now. But is that right, 4,200 miles. Not 42,000.

In any even, the porous block issue on the early cars is not a rumor. There is info about the issue on the PCA tech site

Yep, 4,200!

No oil, no problems, but it's a "young 97".

That should be casting, not casing.

I have a January 1997 but it has a few more miles - so drive that thing.

well, i wouldn't worry too much if it's well taken care of. I just bought a 97 with 19500 miles, and the car looks brand new except for few tiny stone chips in front. As far as RMS goes, well, I knew the risk of buying a Boxster, if happens, I'll deal with it, I thought about buying extended warranty for my, and still doing research on it.

I will probably buy the car, but I know that a new engine will run me 10-12K$, and Porsche may or may not help out with it in view of the age and lack of factory warranty. Hence, I'm purchasing the extended warranty to spread my risk.

Thanks for the input.

a month or so back i purchased a mid yr (I think) 98 with 22K miles. Now from reading all these pourous block known issues i'm kinda sweating a bit, but the car seems to be in perfect shape and has run flawlessly since i bought her, and she's my daily commuter, 25 miles each way, sometimes in stop and go traffic. I definitely did get the extended warranty, but only for 40K miles from date of purschase, I kinda wish i had gotten more miles though... I def. think the warranty is worth it.

Check this out, and it will give you some reassurance.
