Why does my S sound like a vaccum cleaner?
I'm sick of my car's stock exhaust. It sounds decent under a load or even revving high when coasting at speed but, it sounds like ass when I rev it standing still. It sounds like a hoover vaccum anytime I just wanna rev it when it is not moving down the road. Quick call to GHL will hopefully solve this dilema.

I like the sound of the car as is. Nothing wrong with the pitch it makes. I would not call it a Hoover maybe more like an Oreck gone bonkers. Don't tell me you want it to sound like all the kids with Hondas with fat exhaust pipes!

No I don't want the fart can sound, but I would like a more aggressive sound when revved, especically from a stand still. It's all intake sound and no rumble from the back which sucks IMO.

No, I haven't because I couldn't find decent directions for the newer 03-04 grill. I don't know how to pull off the engine grill basically. I heard it is clipped into place but not sure how to access them. You would think porsche could have made it easier/simpler to remove. I wouldn't mind some more intake noise from the desnork, but the intake sound already overides the exhaust when I rev it at a stop.

If you do de-snork it will sound sweet to you, if you like noise..
I like the sound myself, it sounds healthy.
Do you have any pictures that you can post. I don't understand what can be different about your's.
Have you asked Tool Pants, he gets a chance to work on them all.

Does de-snorkling really make a difference? I've seen a lot of posts about it, but I'm not so sure if that's something that would noticeably change the sound of the car. I know it doesn't do anything to performance, but I'm just curious if its a big change.
Perhaps I'll have a project for the weekend.

De-snorking is essentially removing the intake baffle (think intake muffler). Almost all cars have some type of intake baffle. Removing it will give your car a more Darth Vader sound while accelerating.
I say almost all cars have this as I've heard the '03/'04 cars don't have the snork? Don't know if it's true or not. I haven't even bothered looking on my '04 because I feel there's already enough intake noise (it's right by your head!).
I'd love to hear some of the aftermarket mufflers though. If you decide to get one, try to do a video of before and after. I know it won't be very representative but it's better than nothing.

YES, THERE ARE POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS.
The snorkel does a very good job of trapping out water from entering into your intake when driving in hard rain, getting water splashed into the intake or when you spray water in the intake when you're rinsing your car after it gets a bath once a week.
Because of this potential issue, and the really expensive repairs that could be incurred, I decided not to do it. Tool Pants suggested an article on renntech that he gave the page link to in another thread on this currently discussed topic.
I highly recommend you do a search on "desnorkel" and find that thread and read it completely, then make up your own mind.

I put a Cargraphic exhaust on my S 2 weeks ago. If you do headers and cats it helps alot too in power and sound. Our car has 4 cats which greatly increase backpressure and reduce sound.

I heard that the exhaust and intake mods are much more effective if you chip the car or reprogram the ecu. Ohterwise it's mostly louder, but not faster. I'm thinking the GIAC chip would help realize much better hp gains from the exhaust/intake mods.

i think the stock boxster sound is so nice... its unlike any other car..
Adam you may be used to your sound by now but for most people on the road it still sounds amazing.. i think the boxster is just right for this ferrari style sound and i know as my dad has a 355 and it sounds nearly the same as my boxster.. porsche were upgrading a boxster to a twin pipe when i was at the dealer last week and although i agreed and said yer it sounds great, honest it sounded like a boy racer car. it sounds more like a Subaru impreza..
its your call but i think the boxsters sound is the best around..
i dont claim to be an expert in cars or anything but the noise is GREAT and anyone who says it sounds like a fly farting is sad but i havent heard a fly farting so i can comment.
top gear praised the boxster and its engine and noises and they called the noise the boxster makes when reving and i quote..
" proper race car stuff "

I agree it does sound good to me except when I throw revs back at vettes and f-bods at stoplights. It could use a more substantial exhaust note in that situation imo.

F-bods are camaros and firebirds. They both use the same F-body platform.
