If the sound you're describing is coming from the shifter as opposed to the transmission, you probably need to adjust the linkage. It sounds like the linkage or the rod is hitting the housing of the shifter, which means that it's not moving the linkage far enough. Take off the armrest and play with the rod location. It will go away with the correct adjustment.
