What is your occupation?

A few of the other forums I belong to had a thread like this and it was real fun. So,

What is your occupation?

I'll start.

I started an internet company about 8 year ago and it grew to 1300 employees. Then I started a Hummer limo company with 1 limo and its grown into a full time biz and all sorts of different limos. I still have the internet biz and do alot of stuff online that makes money, alot of it now has to do with SEO (search engine optimization), and some stocks on the side :D

So what is your occupation??

cartagena 07-08-2007 11:45 PM

Sold dialup back in the day, then sold company and started traveling around the world investing in real estate.

Newest project is small Boutique Hotel in Colombia. Just today I put up temporary web-page to show my friends. I only spent 15 minutes making the page so it looks really bad and the photos were done in bad light, but here it is: http://www.LaCasaMedellin.com

Next project will probably be a ranch in Argentina.

In my day job I train manufacturing employees how to be more efficient / globally competitive through the use of LEAN tools and Six Sigma methodologies, however over the last year I've gotten involved in network marketing (which everyone said to stay away from) with great results and my wife and I are looking forward to retiring in the near future.

Small animal veterinarian.

Thought about doing large animal work, but too many of the formerly large animal practitioners/now-instructors seemed to ambulate with pronounced limps. Seemed risky.

And yes, unless it gets out of hand, I'll try to answer questions about members' pooches and kitties.

Perhaps one of the admins might see fit to merge this thread into the other Occupation thread?

http://986forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11359&page=1&pp=20

Actually, no wait--that's not even the ORIGINAL Occupation thread. Three need to merge into one. :)

Nice, how are you enjoying it? Great stuff, but takes a lot of management support and courage. I actually find the teaching aspect the most rewarding.

Dan,
What are your top few major tips on not getting ripped off by the dealer for everybody here. :)

danrhinofightteam 07-10-2007 08:13 AM

Top tips...
1. go to a non highway dealer. stores like that tend to have bad buisness habits.
2. Do research on the car or truck to make sure its in you budget.
3. When you go to the dealer go to do buisness. Dealers thrive on that on the spot delivery and will give you a better deal that way.
4.be realistic, dont expect to get a $50000.00 car for 25k and be at 250 per month. A typical discount is between 10-14% off of sticker plus any rebates that are offered.( this may vary at model end due to manufacture support)
5.Many dealers will negoate monthly payment, do not get caught up in this, this is a very good way for us to make more money becouse it takes your focus off the price of the car. Stick to price, then go to payment.

Awesome. 14% off sticker sounds like alot, how often does 10-14% happen? What about on used cars, what a good % off as a buyer?

we still push 6S hard, but mostly because our customer likes the appearance of frequent discrete cost-cutting initiatives. maybe it's our corporation's management style, but most lean / 6S events lack follow-through and don't produce results. sometimes the process owner injects himself into the process to try to sway results, too. frustrating. a lot of people at our company are starting to think of lean events / kaizan / VSM as a waste of a week with a birthday party
on friday. again, though, the customer loves it.

i think sometimes american management corrupts the spirit of the japanese ideas.
