My 1999 is in the shop right now with a vacuum problem.
After a while I had to rev the car to 2000rpm from starts, and the engine had trouble turning over, then the CEL came on. I took it in, and one of the hoses somewhere was leaking and the vacuum in the engine was not working and caused the problems listed above. They fixed the hose and the car worked great, but then after a few days the CEL came on again because the new hose was creating to much of a vacuum.
I would take the car into the shop before you start experiencing problems. Getting the hose replaced cost $600 total, so yes it can be pretty bad.
