aftermarket amp/speakers to factory unit?

i apologize if there's already been a thread about this, but i couldn't find an answer to my question. can i connect an aftermarket amp+speakers to my factory unit? i drive a '99 boxster. also, my car did not come with door speakers. i can still install a pair in them, right? thanks.

To answer your questions yes and yes (but a little more tricky).

With a '99, you probably have a CR or CDR220 head unit. Check out this thread below as it has the pin outs for your head unit. If you have another model, just use the link in my post to get the pin out for the correct one. You can either use the pre-amp outputs or the speaker leads w/ a converter to make them into pre-amp leads.

Anyhow, you'll definitely want to get an amp as the factory h/u is only 18W/ch. Or you can also upgrade to a new head unit that has at least 40W/ channel. And you definitely want to upgrade the dash speakers as they are pretty ****************ty (paper cones really don't facilitate clarity).

Putting in door speakers is a little more work. Since you don't have factory ones, your interior door skin is not molded with space for them nor do you have the wiring there. But I have seen others mount door speakers there and they will look OEM.

Anyhow, here is a quick guide to upgrading the Boxster's Sound System to get you started.
