Convertible Red Clip - quick question

I know that the red clip is placed in the convertible hook latch to give the impression that the top is closed, thereby triggering the infrared sensors. But what do you do if you actually want to close the top with the clip in place? Do you have to remove the red clip and restart the engine etc and then press the conv top switch?? How does it work?

No, you just remove the clip and the top is operable again, no engine on/off required. With the clip in place, the top button won't work.

you just remove the red clip, you dont have to restart the ignition or anything, just unclip it, pull the E brake up and press the Up button to raise the top.

I'm not sure the top will operate with the clip in place, but even if it did, the latch would be blocked by the clip, so you couldn't close the top with the clip in place anyway.

All the clip does is fool the security system into thinking the top latch is closed, causing the IR sensors to be enabled. That's it. It's a security device. You don't need it on unless you intend to arm the security system.

The top will cycle shut with the clip in place, but once it gets to the A-frame it is blocked by the clip. The first time I used my clip I forgot it was on there and tried shutting my top... no joy. I opened the top a little, pulled off the clip, and closed the top. No biggie.

Hi,

Your Top should NOT cycle with the Red Clip in place (mine doesn't). That's what it's there for. It was originally intended as a Fail-Safe to prevent the Top from operating if you have the Speedster option which would damage the Top, Clamshell and the Speedster Humps themselves.

It gained popularity because as a consequence of pressing in the Latch Switch on the header, the Alarm interprets this as the Top being closed and so activates the IR Sensor., but that's not it's intended purpose.

If you have the Smartop relay, a bad OEM relay, or inadvertently insert the Red Clip upside down, or not in far enough to activate the Latch Switch, the Top may still be operable, but if it is, something's wrong...
