There's a couple reasons for the long service interval.
1. it's politically-correct
2. 3000-mile service intervals are kind of silly with modern tech
3. These engines have a "dry-sump" setup so the oil doesn't sit in a grimy oil pan, collecting crap.
4. Nine quarts of oil can dilute a lot of crap.
I change my oil every 10,000 anyhow.

OK. I wasn't thinking about all of those things.
Something about 10k just sounds better to me, but I'm coming from a "different" world. I agree 3k is overkill. I try to change 5-7k.
