PSE for 987 Owners!!!

Hey, I got great news from Porsche today regarding Porsche Sport Exhaust (PSE). It will be coming out this summer. Here is a copy of the actual e-mail I received from PCNA today:

"Hello:

The Boxster S is a great vehicle!
We will be offering the PSE around May/June of this year. We are currently assembling the kits and are in the process of having them shipped from Germany. There is no current pricing for this as of yet. I assume that will be done around the release date. The part number for the kit will be 987 044 200 00. I hope this information helps and have a good day.

Best Regards,

Adam Miller

BM, expect it to cost about $1,700 give-or-take $1K. The kits for the 997 are about $1,800. Plus labor to get it installed. If I do it, I will order from Sunset Porsche (Phil Coy is the contact)...no sales tax...about $75 for shipping.

Heck, PSE kits for the 986 still run about $1,650!

I may have to ask Mark (Houston C4S) for a test-ride before I spend the moo-la$$ !!

I'd be curious as to the sound difference of the PSE on the 2.7 vs the 3.2-4. In some ways I think the engine sound on the 2.7 is better (dare I say, more high-pitched and F1).

It's certainly louder except in 1st gear.

Hi,

I've heard alot of people say that. I've even read several articles which state that the 2.5L cars have the best exhaust sound of the lot...

Thanks for the link, Boxtaboy. That is true for cars ordered from the factory with that PSE option. We are talking about aftermarket from Porsche (Tequipment) to retro-fit a 987 that did not have PSE.

I hope no one here buys that guys car! Or his boots!!

LOL. That's funny. Yeah...killer boots.

For some reason, I was thinking that this guy retrofitted it, as someone in the UK claimed that it costs $1000 pounds sterling if you order it from the factory or $1500 pounds sterling if you retrofit it. Maybe it's only out in Europe right now, and not available in the States yet, as I know the guy who created the youtube video is from Germany.

OK, that makes sense. They may have access to this sooner in Europe.

I don't know if there's an on/off switch for the PSE but from the conversation it sounded like the first try was without ("ohne") PSE and then with ("mit") for the rest of the video. Sounds like the PSE adds some bass but I'm not sure it sounded thousands of $ better than stock. Or it could just be the camera mic.

As soon as I can get Randall to give his opinion (and he
is waiting for me -- not the other way around!) you all
can have a testmonial about its sound.

At the moment, the car is all clean and ready for a concours
event this next Sunday, so no driving til then.

We are having a pollen attack around here. 1/2 inch a day
on all horizontal surfaces everywhere. I may be exaggerating
a tad, but not all that much.

So it stays in the garage.

Anyway, the factory muffler may be heavy (because it's stock)
and sorta costly, but the sound...

Mmmm mmm.

I do not like the switch logic that Porsche uses to control
the valves. So I just plugged the vacuum lines to the valves.
The DME thinks everything is just fine, no dirt is getting into
things where it shouldn't and it sounds great -- all the time.

As long as the ol' right hoof doesn't poke too hard on the
gas pedal, it's really not too loud.

But when it does...

I will let Randall tell you more whenever we get together
so he can report on it.

All the best...

- Mark

PS: Does it sound better than stock?

Oh yeah, baby. Buckle up.

The only thing that PSE does is change the exhaust sound right? That's it?

Mark, does the sound from the video a few posts ago accurately represent the PSE sound? Also, is there an on/off switch for the PSE?

1. Yes, all it does is change the sound. I presume your question
really is: does it enhance performance? Porsche says no.

Does it enhance your perception of performance? I say yes.

Objectively then, no performance gains.

Subjectively, who cares? The sound makes it seem faster.

2. Is the video accurate? Well, it's youtube. The car is stationary.
And the guy is just blipping the throttle.

So within those parameters you can get an idea of its sound.

The real music, however, starts at 3 - 4,000 rpm and gets
better after that. And that's pretty hard to record and post.

Is there a switch? Yes. Absent the Sport Chrono (SC) option, you will
get a separate switch. With SC, it's built in to that function and
comes on only with the SC.

In either case, the DME controls the operation of the valves,
making it quiet from 10 to about 45 mph. I think there are more
parameters it uses than just speed, but I found it very annoying
and since we don't need to follow Euro noise regulations, I just
have it in loud mode all the time.

I would like to add a switch that bypasses the DME, but in a
Boxster, that's easier said than done. Electrically it's simple,
physically, well, that's another matter.

I hope that helps.

Best,

- Mark

so we are talking about 1500 for a better sound? you don't even get different exhaust tips....I don't know, maybe if they put a sticker on the box or advertised it with a 10 - 15 horsepower gain I would jump at it...haha

otherwise, there is one muffler on this board on a blue 987....I like the way it looks....not sure what type of muffler it is tho.....the tips are round and it looks like it has little holes around them....off to google I go.....

I think you are referring to the SpeedArt muffler. There is a sample of it on a Cayman on YouTube. I like the look/sound of that as well.

Another consideration is Milltek, that is also popular in the Cayman forums and seems to actually produce some gain in HP.

$1800 for sound?

Wouldn't it make more sense to buy an IPOD and download some sound clips of a F1 racer.

They sound pretty cool!
