The car that made me sell my Boxster S

So I finally got my replacement for the Boxster S that I let go in January:

MNBoxster 03-12-2007 01:41 PM

Hi,

You're fortunate - it's a very nice car! Good Luck!

Happy Motoring!... Jim'99

986Roadster 03-12-2007 01:42 PM

ya thanks for showing off, maybe you should of posted this in the ferrari f430 forum.

congrats!

bmussatti 03-12-2007 01:43 PM

Nicely done, Webster!

alikhan78 03-12-2007 01:48 PM

Damn, what a beauty. Congratulations

denverpete 03-12-2007 01:48 PM

I don't get it - why would someone put an F430 kit onto the body of a Boxster? Weird.

Nice job Webster! Looks great and I bet it's even more fun to drive!

Ronzi 03-12-2007 01:56 PM

Very nice.
How do you like the F1 tranny?

Perfectlap 03-12-2007 02:01 PM

hey! they forgot to put in the shift lever!!!

jk

At some point before death I will add a prancing horse to the stable. Even if just for a year. I was watching Barret Jackson and they acutioned a cut Daytona spyder for nearly $200K. So maybe these cars are good investment if even a hack job Ferrari costs more than the average home after 20+ years.

boggtown 03-12-2007 02:14 PM

Orange side markers????? Man... when will they learn? Id get some clear ones, or red, even yellow would look cool.

webster132 03-12-2007 02:35 PM

Thanks, guys.

The F1 is pretty amazing. The shifts are incredibly fast, but still have a very mechanical feel to them. When you're rolling of the line, you can feel how the system is slipping the clutch ever so slightly to get you rolling.

It's a tossup, though. Before I picked the F430, I test drove a 360 with a manual gated shifter. Man, that **************** is very fun too. The click sounds when you shift are very addictive.

And it is kind of sad that with the Boxster gone, I no longer have any stick drives at all. The Audi is a torque-converter automatic and both of the sport cars are egear/f1.

The sidemarkers are a joke. Especially the small bubble ones. Ugh.

They do the same **************** on the Gallardo, but at least it blends in okayish when the car is yellow. Red and orange is a bit more gnarly.

Bavarian Motorist 03-12-2007 02:57 PM

Congratulations!!! It's beautiful.

Is it true you can get perfect launches w/ the f1?

Not on a US-spec F430 :(. The European model has launch control, which will give you a perfect launch (and a 3.5s 0-60 time), but Ferrari deemed that too risky for the US. Apparently they were afraid of getting sued over it.

It's weird, though. My Gallardo does have launch control (not that I've had a chance to use it yet) and so does the 360 Stradale and Ferrari Enzo. They had one of the latter in the shop when I was there to pick up the car today. Holy schmoly, that car is wicked.

Bavarian Motorist 03-12-2007 03:13 PM

Another thing you may cry about is that the Euro Spec models get a rated 490hp as opposed to 483 here.

I'm not sure if our standards are slightly different or if they detuned the engine slightly for the US, a common thing amongst European automakers...

We have the largest car market in the world, yet we always get the crappiest cars :(

BTW: Have you considered selling the Gallardo? There are Gallardos, 2004 and 2005 alike that are going for 140,000.

Compare that to the used F430 market, where there are less than HALF of the amount of Gallardos floating around, and none can even be bought for less than 200k.

I fear for you losing a lot of $$ on your other beauty.

The Gallardo had a major update in 2006. That's why the 04 and 05s are getting hammered. Most 06s are still going for 170-180. But yah, there's certainly money to be lost regardless. But it's not nearly as bad as the grapevine would let you believe ;).

I don't have any plans for selling, though. Incredibly different cars. And the Gallardo is a coupe too.

Bavarian Motorist 03-12-2007 03:51 PM

So is the Gallardo more of a track car? What is your purpose for it exactly? Maybe for looking nice when you go out?

I apologize for the questions...I don't want to make you think I'm interviewing you :)

What's the purpose of any sports car :)? Rarely would it be transportation. If it was, you'd be better off with a Camry. So it's for having fun, of course.

But yeah, I intend to take both cars to the track this year. Signing up for LAPS (http://lapsincorporated.com/).

Ghostrider 310 03-12-2007 04:16 PM

Beautiful car, if you have never owned red get ready for a "pull over" festival...

I guess what I was really asking was, "Why both?"

Are they that much different in their appeal that you find them both fun and exciting in unique ways?

Ghostrider 310 03-12-2007 04:23 PM

Why Both? Because he can...Same reason someone has 18K gold faucets...

SC986 03-12-2007 04:30 PM

Congrats on the new machine! I can't even dream of riding in one much less owning one, though that can't stop me from wanting!

I could see that if you were rolling in so much $$ it was sticking out of your ass, but the fact is, most people that buy these cars are not uber-billionaires like you may think, and they do have budgets and such to adhere to, and money IS somewhat of importance.

But if that is his reason, then hey, good for him

Ghostrider 310 03-12-2007 04:51 PM

You could be right, however, the maintenence costs alone for both vehicles would bankrupt most budgets that include a mortgage.

hts 03-12-2007 05:06 PM

I'm sorry to hear about your financial troubles Mr. Webster. It must be terribly frustrating to have to trade down from a Boxster to an F430.

I was really just wondering what was so different about the two that he wants to keep both. Not trying to knock him for having both in any way.

I want to know some insider details about the cars.

BuffaloBoxster 03-12-2007 06:44 PM

congrats.. I'd trade my Boxster, my left nut, and a share of my soul for that ride...

Tifosi forever

webster132 03-12-2007 07:32 PM

The cars are night'n'day different. The Ferrari has a very light feel and more edgy style (you can let the tail hang out pretty easily). The Lambo is super solid, planted, but also quite heavy. It takes much more effort to move around, but you have a higher level of confidence that you can go real fast in turns.

And that's just the driving part. Everything else is very different too. Sound, interior feel and look, and of course the difference of coupe vs spider.

I'm not convinced that I'll keep both, though. If one of them turns out to be used way more than the other, I'll probably sell the lesser used one.

Money is certainly a concern. And I don't have 18K gold faucets either ;).

BTW, running costs are low as long as the cars are in warranty. The Lambo only has 2 years, though. The Ferrari has 4(!).

Bavarian Motorist 03-12-2007 07:49 PM

Four is impressive.

Two is ridiculous.

Shows which companies are confident in their product and which aren't.

Although I've never driven or ridden on a Lambo or a Ferrari, I get the feeling their respective logos, "bull" and "horse" are descriptive metaphors for what the cars are all about.

Lamborghini seems more brutish whereas Ferrari seems more light-footed, soar-through-the-air, agile; just about anything but brutish.

Just my perception anyways.

To be fair, the 430 coupes have 3 years. And their 12 cylinders (599, 612) only has 2 as well.

The generous 4 years on the spiders come from Ferrari bundling an extra warranty on the cars to jack up the price.

It definitely still is nice, though. But as usual there's more to the story.

djomlas 03-12-2007 09:02 PM

man id love to get a ride in either one...an im in chicago too hehehe, hook it up man :)

webster132 03-13-2007 06:21 AM

I'd be happy to take some of the Chicago folks for a drive if it was coordinated with some event I was going to anyway.

That was a no brainer......AWESOME FERRARI BRO

markk 06-17-2007 10:06 AM

Congrats. Very, very nice F-car. And I read you have an L-car as well !!!

Makes me feel a bit cheap with a BoxsterS, BMW M3, Mits. EVO 8 MR RS and some motercycles ;-)

Happen to shortly testdrove a F430-spider and a Gallardo Spider on the track just a few weeks ago. One lap with each, directly after eachother. Following a marshall and with a very strick instructor next to me. Liked the F-car much more. Cannot really put arguments to it. It just felt much nicer, balanced, better quality. F1-shift and the shift-levers in F430 are fabulous. Shifts in Lambo are nice as well but the levers ? Let's put it this way, I like the levers on my Playstation Logitech steering wheel better ;-)

Woehahaha, makes me think of the F430 track lap. I went to a corner full throtlle in 2 near rev limiter, instructor yelled "break, break" and I shifted into third, went WOT for another second or so and then breaked hard and steered it into the corner. Instructor reacted nicely and said "ok, you have some track experience, but don't do that again".

Mark.
