I haven't repainted mine, but bought it off ebay pretty dinged up. The black plastic was showing through the silver paint.

So, I just removed ALL the silver paint with my fingernail and took it down to the black plastic, and now it's in the car and looking great and unique too. I highly recommend you remove yours and do this.

Removal is easy, pop the base off the plastic center console and then yank straight up on the shifter to release it from the top bit. Of course, if you see a set screw you should loosen that, but most are just held on with a friction fit.
