I installed these in my car a little over a year ago. I seem to remember, you need the side brackets or they won't "install" into your car. You probably left those brakets in the car you sold? Hopefully not.
I remember those side brackets being a PITA to install. Struggled with them to get them to line up properly, trying to hold both the brackets in the right spot and trying to slide the cupholder unit into them. Then I figured out that the rears of the brackets just snap into place. Doh!
I really liked these cup holders. They worked real well. The one that fits into the center console storage compartment? Not so much.
