RMS Driver Tool

I found on Pelican a RMS driver tool:

The cost is a little under $160.00 shipped. I checked with 2 Indy shops around the Everett area in hope of renting one and had no luck. A lot of money for what I hope will be a one time use. The tool looks identical to the seal driver created by Sir Tools - #ST- P250. Most sell on internet in the $200 range.

Anyone out there purchased one of these?

I just finished reading a how-to and must have missed the reference to it.

I'm hearing mixed reviews. Some swear by them others do it with a ball pin hammer. My Indy said he borrowed one the first couple times he replaced the RMS's and after that he did it with tools he had in the shop *?^)*?%#@!?

I had one made at a local metal shop from a friend I know and it worked perfectly. The key was getting a straight start and I was able to do that without the tool. I used the green ring to get it mounted on the crankshaft without damaging the inner seal. I used my thumbs and pressed fairly hard and worked my way around in a circle to get it inserted equally. You can only get it so far with your tumbs and then hammered with gentle to medium taps to drive it home with the tool I had made.

I just finished installing it and will take pictures tomorrow.

I believe the tool also installs the seal to the correct depth.

Here are the pictures of the RMS Driver that I had made. It was a race bearing that seemed to be just the exact size.





The Bentley Manual recommends setting the replacement seal to 13 mm. After reading Tool Pants' post on Renntech, I decided to set it at 14 mm. The orginal RMS was set to 11 mm. Tool Pants' post can be found here.



The ears on the side of the tool allowed me to use the hammer on them. I rotated the tool and hammered on the ear, if the seal needed to be kept straight. It didn't take long and the RMS was set home.
