It may look like chicken wire, but it's not. It's a mesh material, and IT'S ONLY UESD behind the openings, behind the bumpers. Without them being there, you would have an ugly gapping whole there and allot of trash hitting your radiator and bumber frame. Mine are powder coated black, so you can't really see them to well, but the silver colored ones just make it look cheap(like chicken wire) but they aren't.
Here is another example. You can see without these the metal farme would be more visible and exposed. That's the main reason these mesh inserts are used.
