Hi,

Yes, I suspect that the leading and trailing edges were once 45° as well but have worn smooth.

A squeal is just an audible vibration and the pads will vibrate when coming into contact with the Disc, but only at the edges. By Chamfering the egdes, you pull the contact point closer to the center of the Pad where the Steel Backing plate is stronger and less prone to vibrate. Hope this helps...
